If you want to get a basic feel for how much something is worth on the AH, check out a site like WowHead and look at the “buyout” price.
This doesn’t work. You cannot bid on the auctions of any of your own characters. To make this work, you need a trusted friend to help you.
Actually, that’s exactly the kind of UI I do not like. I want to see all my spells all the time. This is especially true for totems–I need to be able to throw out new ones at a moment’s notice, and clicking on single spot on the screen is the fastest way. A UI like that one requires at least two actions.
D’oh. Right, I’ve only done this with someone else now that I think about it. We got into voice chat and she would tell me each time she put something in, and I would keep refreshing the category and buying it up with the gold she’d given me. We used this to get “Alliance-only” recipes from her Alliance character and launder gold to that character in return.
Ferret Herder’s explanation is good, but there’s another approach. Instead of transferring gold from Alliance to Horde (or vice-versa) using worthless items the neutral auction house, you can transfer high-priced items for very little gold.
*** Caution: Only do this when aren’t many people online and time it carefully ***
The neutral AH takes a big cut of the money you transfer. Instead, take a very high-priced item your Allie has, and list it on the neutral AH for a few silver. Then buy it with your Hordie. You still have an AH fee, but it’s not nearly so usurious.
This works best if you have a friend with you or if you have two accounts both logged in at the same time, so you can post it and buy it in the space of a few seconds. Otherwise, some lucky third party may jump in and grab your item away cheap.
There are often items selling for two or three times as much on the Horde auction house as on the Alliance auction house (or vice-versa) and you can do well taking advantage of that. At Christmas time, when Horde are making green Santa suits and Alliance are making red ones, our server had red ones for about 10G on Alliance AH and 30-50G on Horde.
I made a pile of red ones with my Alliance tailor, transferred them to one of my Hordies, and made a pile.
I don’t know if WoWHead has individual server AH prices or not, but it WILL vary by server. Newer servers, the players don’t have as much gold to throw around as players on an established server do. Also, newer servers don’t have as many higher-level toons buying things to “twink” that player’s lower-level toons. And even with that said, AH prices are going to vary server to server even between otherwise-equivalent servers.
Although I haven’t used OPie yet, I’m willing to bet a good amount of gold that it’s actually significantly faster (with some practice, of course). It requires two actions, sure, but those actions combined are extremely fast. Clicking on a static button requires a little more time and precision than hitting a quick key combo (or even just an unused mouse button) and flicking the mouse in a certain direction, especially if you’re doing stuff in the rest of the screen and you need to hunt down a spell/totem you use infrequently. This sort of UI is to clicking on buttons with the mouse what clicking on buttons with the mouse is to navigating buttons with the arrow keys.
Especially for totems, I’d think this would be highly useful. Shift+A for Air, Shift+W for Water, Shift+E for Earth, Shift+F for Fire. If you’re using WASD for movement, you’re barely moving your hand to access them.
Can I suggest that we retire this thread and continue WoW discussions here? This thread is 29 pages and over 1000 posts…it’s getting a little unwieldy. I don’t know at what point things become a little much for the server to deliver, but we have to be at least approaching that point.
Even if it was a thousand pages I doubt it would be any more trouble for the server than a thread that was two pages, since it’s serving it up a page at a time. I’m not saying not to switch to the new thread. A newer(less imposing) thread might attract more potential guild members.
Oddly, yesterday I exterminated my level 7 Tauren Shaman and recreated him as an Orc Shaman. Then I read this thread and saw the discussion of Tauren size frustration, as well as Pleonast’s helpful posts about Shamans. I must be plugged into the gestalt.
I am exploring and loving hybrid toons, and really appreciate all the tips that Pleonast gave. And yes, I’m interested in seeing a screenshot of your UI. One of my biggest problems as a hunter is the enormous number of shots and spells (pet’s and mine), so many that I cannot place them all in useful places on the screen. Being intensely visual, I need to know their place in space, rather than the path through a menu, as in that circular addon.
Keep the class tips coming, folks, I’m having a WOW identity crisis and am making new alts daily…:smack:
Pfui. Before I discovered Death Knighty goodness, I hit both the server toon limits AND the overall toon limit several times. I’ve deleted more toons than most players ever make. I am the champion of alt-itis.
I have a chat block to each end of the bottom, and a block in the middle of a number of custom lines, and the viewport is centered above. I used some of the mods found in CT core to shift the different screen components around.
I have my DK’s spell bars separated out, so i dont hit anything by accident. I think I have [not counting the pet bar and the DK skill bar] something like 40 buttons …
Oh maaaaaaaaaaaan! I was so happy — this has turned into the single longest-running thread I’ve ever started in my nearly six years here! (My previous longest only generated 218 replies.) I was so proud of myself!
This thread remains open until you ask us to close it, Mister Rik. You’re the OP. If you want to move to the other one, we’ll close this one for you. If you want to keep it open, that’s fine, too.
It doesn’t matter to me either way — I was just being silly with my last post
jayjay had a good point, in that this thread is probably becoming a bit unwieldy and intimidating due to its size. Go ahead and close it - we’ll just say this thread has reached level 80 and it’s time to reroll
