World - Please all visit my site and download something on the same day.

Am I being naive, or was it a bit silly of Firefox to invite the whole world to all download their new browser from their website on ONE day.

Perhaps predictably the page isn’t loading.

Hey it loaded for me. Took about 15 minutes, though. Being on the SDMB makes me barely notice that, though…

Worst part is FF3 isn’t even up yet after that wait.

That’s why I’m trying to get there (to see if it’s up yet) thanks for letting me know

Hopefully FF3 will properly render the icons for all my bookmarks toolbar bookmarks.

And I wonder if it will allow me to show my ff bookmarks on the start bar like I can with IE ‘links’

Have you tried the FF3 Release Candidates? I’m using that now, have had few problems.

My bookmarks toolbar icons look properly rendered, but I don’t recall FF2 having any issue with them.

It’s probably just an issue with my setup then.

I’m actually fairly new to FF. I had it yonks ago, but I was put off by how long it took to startup. Then more recently I was told it starts up pretty quick so I donwloaded it (FF2)
As today is the 17th I’ll (hopefully) get hold of the final release instead of any beta releases. I tend to shy away from betas unless I really want something immediately.

Technically RCs are not betas and should be more stable, but your point still stands, no reason not to simply wait until the final release is out, hopefully later today.

Now running Firefox 3!

Alright, I’m up and running with FIrefox 3…not too keen on the new look, but maybe it will grow on me. But one thing I do NOT like is what happens when I start to type in a URL in the address bar. In FF2, I’d just get a little list of previously visited URLs, but now the list is dumb-looking. Rather than just a nice plain list, in black text, it has the name of the webpage, with an icon next to it, and the actual URL listed below it in blue, all the while taking up like five times the space.

Anyone figure out yet how to turn that off and go back to the way it was?

I’m using littlefox as my theme. It’s very minimal.

Oh! Wait, do you mean the Awesome Bar? Why would you want to get rid of the Awesome Bar? I mean, I suppose you can, but that’s the new big thing. Give it a try.

Notice it checks your shortcuts and a few other things.

For example, if I knew I bought something at Yahoo, I can type in Shopping, and it’ll show me URLs to shopping carts I hit.

Mother fuck!!!

All my bookmarks are gone. Eat shit and die Firefox, I hope Microsoft buys your ass out.

Nice concept. I a little annoying if you don’t want to be reminded about the porn you’ve visited every time you use it.

FYI - I started a Firefox 3 thread for new users. The title of this one is probably going to be overlooked by most people and it’s not really about the browser but about the wisdom of a national “downoad day”.

Just went there and had no problems. YMMV.

Posted w/FF3

Wait a sec… It doesn’t keep the bookmarks? How do I back up my FF bookmarks? I would cry if I lost my 1000s of organized bookmarks.

In FF2, ‘Export’ your bookmarks from the Bookmark Organiser or Manager or whatever they call it. They’ll appear as an HTML file somewhere named bookmarks.html. You can then import them into FF3.

Silly me. I should have done that. I lost a few of the newer ones.

It did for me.

As you can see in my other thread I think it’s confused because I tried out FF 3 Beta at one point and then went back to FF 2. It never offers the option to import FF 2 bookmarks if you’ve ever tested FF 3 apparently. Luckily I was able to recover them since the FF 2 settings are stored elsewhere. Dumb ass implementation though. They have to know that thousands of people have been running a version of FF 3 since they’ve been so eager to get people stress testing it.

Still, back the fuckers up.

I downloaded because of the record, but will wait until my FF 3 beta updates itself.

Strangely, it did that earlier today, the status bar now reads “Gran Paradiso” and the about info says this is still a beta.

Search for bookmarks.html if your bookmarks file is missing. And do back it up on occasion, okay?
