Worlds Greatest Hero

With all the Superhero threads floating around lately I thought I’d chime in with this one. Basically, the idea is to nominate one superhero from the world of comics as the worlds greatest Any and all logical arguments will be allowed (this is to level the playing field for those none comic geeks who love batman none the less).

That being said I Nominate The Batman

The batman is the greatest for the reason that he is the weakest and yet unbeatable. Allow me to explain. Batman has no super powers, no X-ray vision, no Green power ring, no claws, eyebeams, mental projections, or super strength. None. He is as strong and agile as a human could ever hope to be, but unlike Captain America he has no Super Solider Serum to thank for it.

Batman is a man who is driven by a quest. A quest to never again allow any man, woman, or child to suffer as he has suffered. At six years old he witnessed the brutal murder of his parents after watching the mark of Zorro (a film that he avoided for the rest of his life). The words Bruce/Batman used:

Show the deep emotional scars this day left on the young boy. This is not unusual, sadly. What it is, is the makings of a man of steel. Not the steel of Superman, outer steel, but a deep inner core of unbreakable Mettle. Bruce spent the next 18 years of his life in constant training, learning all methods of martial arts, not just the combat aspects but the underlying philosophies. Bruce came to be the Ultimate Crime fighter.

His power lies mostly within his two pointy ears. He posses a mind gifted with a deep understanding of criminal psychology, chemistry, engineering, metallurgy and a dozen other sciences and skill I can’t even spell. His tactical mind, which always plans a dozen moves ahead of even his allies makes him most feared by those who know him best (in fact his files on all the weaknesses of the Justice League lead to his temporary expulsion from it)

Even cataclysmic injuries are not enough to break the Dark Knight. In a battle with bane, after running a gauntlet of his deadliest foes (the Joker, Two–Face, and the Mad Hatter to name a few) spent and exhausted Batman fought the Venom (strength enhancing drug) pumped up Bane, who broke his back. Months of recovery and a poor replacement later Bruce walked again (hard enough) but regained his edge, his total control of his body and mind at the razors edge, smiling in deaths face yet again.

Lastly The World greatest Detective is superbly trained, and very well equipped. but as the last example shows he is merely mortal. It is easy to run into a bank full of gun toting criminals when you are faster then a speeding bullet, have a power ring that projects and inestimable force field, or a healing factor that closes bullet holes as fast as you can make them (not that they can get thorough the unbreakable bones anyway). But with his mortality comes the knowable that each and every leap from the bell tower is a leap that could be his last, that one well placed round at his unprotected face and there is one less member of the long underwear crowd. Yet night after night, he places his life on the line to protect the innocent from the scum.

In conclusion Bruce Wayne is a hero not because of what powers the universe saw fit to grant to him, but because of the power in him that he forces upon the universe. Instead of sinking into a life of sinful decadence like so many “trust fund brats” Bruce forged a legend, bigger then life. Truly, the Legend created by Bob Kane is awe inspiring, a tale and a model for all of us to emulate. And that is the measure of a true hero, the heroism they inspire in others. Batman for world Greatest

PS Sorry for only one cite, but it’s late and this thing is 710 words already.

The Worlds Greatest Hero is Spiderman.

Spiderman refused to go after a thief, thinking it was not his responsibility to deal with such matters. That same thief ended up killing Spiderman’s uncle, then hiding in an abandoned warehouse. Spidey gets there, as the place is surronded by police. He is in a blood rage, ready to kill the burglar.

He enters the place, first confusing the burglar and then beating him up quite badly. Spidey is ready to kill him, but before he does it he has a change of heart. It would go against everything he believes in, he won’t do it. (IMHO) he also stops because it will be a reminder that with great power comes great responsibility, his mantra.

He’s comparable to those kids who shoot up schools. Constantly bullied at school, couldn’t seem to get a break. Finally he gets a break and he can’t tell anybody about it. Nobody, because his family would be endangered by his enemies. He couldn’t cash the checks he got as Spiderman, at the time when he needed it the most.

His Uncle was killed by a burglar that he could’ve stopped, perhaps one of the few times when he could’ve controlled the situation and stopped bad things from happening. He didn’t act, even when he could’ve used his powers.

He’s a teenager, and as teenagers we’re prone to anger and moodiness in reaction to the small things, things we can’t control. Imagine such a big thing happening, and what would happen knowing that for certain you could’ve done something, anything.

Basically, it says a lot about his character, how he didn’t go completely apeshit, becoming a vigilante ala The Punisher and probably getting shot down by a SWAT team due to recklessness and inexperince. Or he could’ve beaten the crap out of all the classmates that had bothered him, the ultimate nerd fantasy.

Compared to how powerful most heroes were, he was actually pretty weak* in the powers department.

Instead, he kept a cool head, was loving to his Aunt, let the bullies beat him up, kept his powers secret to most, had a lot of people he loved or liked die. Amazing that he didn’t die, commit suicide, or go on a rampage.

He survived, didn’t do all of the above mentioned things, or become introverted, cold and anti-social like Batman had done when he lost someone.

*He could die thru any other human means, perhaps maybe survive a little longer than most humans, and the trick to it is to get him still and unconcious, because of that spider-sense of his.

Sorry. The greatest hero is and always will be Wonder Woman.

For my proof, I give my web site: http://www.wonderwoman-online.com

The greatest hero of all time is Ambush Bug.

Because his arch enemy is an argyle sock.

But it happens that, for me and forever, is Superman. He can kill spiders and bats and he can beat wonder women as well, no matter how macho he may seem.

I’ll save the long explainings. Be my guest.

“Believe it or not” … OK, maybe not him.

I’ll vote for Goku, especially before he got married. I mean what other 12 year olds would think nothing of defeating the biggest and most dangerous renegade army inthe world. All by himself.

Another vote for Spider-Man. The ultimate underdog super-hero.

Well, at least before he married a supermodel, anyway…

I have a rebutall to spider man. For one thing, he is as I mentioned in the OP superpowered. It’s alot easier to fight Venom when you can jump 10 stories straight up and bench press a tank. But more importantly spider man quit being spiderman so many times its not even fun. He even went so far as to try to have his powers removed. THis does not take away from his greatness. He is still one of the world greatest, the fact that he even tried to do the things he did is heroic (could you out the weight of the world on your shuolders?). But he is eclisped by the dark knight

What about…

SUPERDUCK!

I vote for Mikey Mouse.

Yes, but does Spiderman have a gadget for if all else fails? Batman has millions of dollars and is an inventor. He could drop several tactical missiles on anybody if he wanted. If Spiderman gets shot or hurt badly, he has to go to a hospital and hope nobody figures out who he is, fight the villian before he kills again, and worry about what people think of all those odd injuries he gets are from.

Basically, someone breaks Spidey’s back, it’s pretty much game over for Spidey. Not so with the bat. Batman has plenty of leverage amongst the superheroes, a lot of them will listen and be under his command if he wants it so. Spidey does have the respect of a lot of heroes, but he doesn’t have the ability to contact the Fantastic Four or The Avengers if things get out of hand.

Batman has a ridiculous amount of backup, money, allies and communication devices.

Yeah. However Spiderman doesn’t completely alinate those around him. If Spidey’s identity were to get out, his friends and family would likely die. Thus rather than endanger his he gives up hs powers and the pressure.

Batman alinates all his friends, allies and girlfriends. He couldn’t care less if he endangers his friends, as long as he gets his man. He’s cold and calculating, and he has a plan for anybody if he believes they are going to or have turned Rogue. Most of Spidey’s villians aren’t homicidal madmen like Batmen villians, and while Batman ould do it he has never killed The Joker or any other villian. Look at all the people they’ve killed, that he could’ve saved.

Batman has never given up, but his character, it’s not one that is the greatest. It’s the flaws, his quirks that stop him from being a true hero, IMO. Batman has never faced off against someone that he couldn’t be adequately prepared to deal with. Spiderman has faced Thanos, despite it being like an ant and an elephant.

I 2nd Wonder Woman, she is the Greatest Hero Ever, she deserves her own Good Movie. Good Website! Mockingbird - ? Do you know where I can find Wonder Woman Collectible and New Stuff?

Non-Powered hereoes is a toss up between Nick Fury of SHIELD or Batman

Powered hereos has to go to Jesse Custer “The Preacher” because the guy has god’s power for shit’s sake with a close runner up going to the Saint of Killers because he could kill god so long as he got the drop on him.

Best joke super hero is Captain Cave-Man. He has the gadgets and the fly bitches.

The Flash. Barry Allen (Flash II) and Wally (Flash III) in a virtual tie, with Jay (Flash I) running back a few steps.

Superman has every power in the book. Even Spider-Man (son’t forget the hyphen!) has a nifty grab-bag of tricks. The Flash has only one power.

But no hero has ever been able to use a single power to such advantage as the Flash. Through knowledge of science (well, psuedoscience and technobabble ;)) and sheer imagination, Barry (and later Wally) was able to turn stamping his feet, waving his arms, and shivering into an arsenal that’s the envy of the superhero world. It’s been said that Batman could win any fight if he was prepared. Well, that may be true, but, in the main, it is also true of the Flash, and he can be prepared in the space between seconds. It is Flash’s inventiveness, his ability to think fast more than his ability to move fast that made him an effective hero.

Barry and Wally had no inner demons, no quest for vengeance or redemption. They just had a hero, the Flash before them, and, upon being granted powers by a freak stroke of fate, they knew what they had to do. They are the glimmering hope of every comic fan. Not gods or aliens, but ordinary people given the chance to do extraordinary things, and taking it past their potential.

Jon Osterman, a simple nuclear physicist, was accidentally locked inside his lab’s RO-7 Radiation Emitting Plot Device, turning him into

Doctor Manhattan

Dr. Manhattan can do… anything. Literally, anything. He manipulates matter on an sub-atomic scale with the power of his mind. He exsists in more than three dimensions, and can perceive time in all directions. He single-handedly won the Vietnam war. His very exsistence kept the Russkies in check. When his girlfriend dumped him, he left the Earth to build cities on Mars, triggering World War III. Later, when she convinced him of the intrinsic value of human beings, he departed to another “calmer” galaxy to make some of his own.

Also, he disintegrated Rorscach, which was the Watchmen universe’s Batman equivalent, thus making him tougher than the Caped Crusader.

The fact that Batman is a billionaire is slightly off topic. No one could attain that level of skill with out millions of dollars of training (even the Punisher had the US Government sponsor his training)

His skills as an inventor were discussed in the op, and you aid my argument in this respect.

Batman’s expertise in these areas are drawn from his (un-enhanced) natural intelligence, much in the same way that Spider man created his web shooters and costumes.

This is also a side

Basically, someone breaks Spidey’s back, it’s pretty much game over for Spidey. Not so with the bat. Batman has plenty of leverage amongst the superheroes, a lot of them will listen and be under his command if he wants it so. Spidey does have the respect of a lot of heroes, but he doesn’t have the ability to contact the Fantastic Four or The Avengers if things get out of hand.

The medical issue I will deal with latter, however this is a false statement as The human torch is Spider-Man’s closest friend in the super hero community and he was a one time member of the Avengers. As they say membership has its privileges.

As does Spiderman. How can he afford rent in one of the most expensive areas of Brooklyn (with room access no less) with wife and child and still have funds left over for spare costumes, web fluid, assorted web related equipment, spider tracers and film? Being a billionaire does fill in a few plot gaps, but I digress.

That is an over simplification. Batman is not a one man operation as hard as he tries to make it seem that way. For instance most of his medical needs are handled by his butler Alfred (who has training in combat medicine, and is closer to Bruce’s Godfather then anything else) and Dr. Lessile Tompkins, who is also a friend of the family. Not to mention (by way of batgirl) The Gordon family, as well as Tim Drake’s father (who was kidnapped in part because Bane DID in fact find out who the Batman really was, but again more on that later). There are easily a hundred people who are directly or indirectly living under the protection of Bruce Wayne’s duel life much the same with almost every hero. It’s just too big of a job to do alone.

See above.

Sadly this has been proven true on numerous occasions (The Hal Jordan GL and Superman to name a view) SO keep tabs on people just in case they decide to become universe menace #1 is only prudent.

This is just a bold faced lie. Venom and Carnage alone have filled a few hundred people. Easy, and yet spider-man too has never killed any of them. Killing is easy, restraint is hard, and both of these heroes have that in spades

Spider-Man at one time wielded the power cosmic as Capitan universe

Nuff said

The first superhero is still the best.

Long live Doc Savage, the Archenemy of Evil.

I like Doc Savage as well.

Also, I’ve always had a certain love for the Green Lantern Corps-- essentially the attributes of every Silver Age Green Lantern: basic costume, single source of power, one big weakness in the color yellow. And every character that becomes a GL is chosen because of that heroic attribute: lack of fear. Or maybe excess of confidence. One of those.

I have to say I like Captain America, as well. Handled correctly, I saw him as fighting for justice on the one hand, and being perpetually a little depressed about his country on the other. And also, he was still a good guy when it was no longer cool to be a good guy.

I’ll also vote for Spidey. Wise cracker, great powers, great villains, great backstory (and I’ll always be a little irked that in the movie, Flash Thompson is not the president of the Spider-Man fanclub).

Batman, I really like him and all, but I also think that people maybe build him up a little too much, make him hyperintelligent because he has to measure up to the rest of the JLA. C’mon, his name isn’t Brain-Man, make him more mysterious, not just smarter! And more gadgets!
I loved Batman Year One, because it was told from Lieutenant Gordon’s perspective, making Batman a little more creepy and mysterious.

And simply 'cause I like 'em:
Captain Britain (in the 80s, great costume!)
Nightcrawler (he was a freak, he crawled around, he could teleport-- perfect hero for an awkward pre-teen)
The Thing (he’s made out of orange rocks, and the attribute he mentions most is his blue eyes; you have to like that)

Another favorite hero was Lou from Major Bummer. Aliens implanted a device in his body that made him huge, practically invulnerable, occasionally superintelligent, and (and this is the kicker) made him a literal magnet for trouble. I really liked that comic.

If someone can vote for Goku can I vote for Vash the Stampede?

He is stuck in a horrible situation, with no family and only one real role model. He rises above that to keep a very high standard of morality. He protects the weak and innocent while showing decency even for the guilty and makes “love and peace” his top priority. He is truly my hero.

If I can’t vote for him, I’ll just second Ambush Bug.

I have to vote for Goku also. Vegeta is my favorite character, though. But unless you watch DB/DBZ from the beginning, you can’t understand or fathom the power that a Saiyan wields and what the characters go through to get to where they are. Let me put it this way, Goku at Super-Saiyan 3 could kill God without trying.
