What prison in the world houses the most inmates? I can’t seem to find the definitive answer to this.
The most crowded jail (short -term or pre detention holding facility) is Cook County Jail in Chicago:Cook County Jail most crowded jail in the US - World Socialist Web Site
The world’s most crowded prison system belongs to the island of Haiti which is apparently experience an overcrowding rate of 464%:Highest to Lowest - Prison Population Total | World Prison Brief
It would probably be impossible to get an accurate answer for the largest single prison population as most countries would simply not give those numbers for fear of attracting condemnation for potential human rights abuses.
North Korea.
(badum, tish !)
More serious answer : Rikers Island is possibly the largest by size/area, and houses ~12,500 inmates + 1,500 guards. Qincheng prison in China officially boasts 5,000 guards but I can’t find stats on how many people they’re watching over, and this being a Chinese prison the official headcounts would probably be BS anyway.
Not even close. It’s on an island and it’s in the middle of New York City which means land is expensive. Rikers Island is only 413 acres.
The biggest prison in America is going to be some rural prison with a lot of farm property. I don’t know which is the biggest but Angola Prison in Louisiana covers 18,000 acres.
Australia.
