Worst gift you've ever gotten?

My Mom loves to shop for “deals” at thrift stores. So far this year I got a 20 year old CD album cover (the CD was missing, might explain why it cost only $.25). My son got a flashing jack-o-lantern light (the kind you put into the jack-o-lantern.) It was not Halloween.

I should add that I truly love and appreciate my parents, and I know she is trying to be thoughtful. And they do give good gifts, which I am grateful for. These just left me scratching my head.

My aunt always gives me the “free with purchase” gift. It’s soooo obvious! Not the handbag, but the matching coin purse. Not the perfume, but the lotion. Not the robe, but the matching slippers. Not the full size, but the sample size. It’s still decent stuff, but it kinda kills the gesture when you know you’re only getting a gift so she can get herself something even bigger and better.

Couple years ago my stepdad told us he was shipping some food and other gifts. We got this box of cheeses that I unwrapped immediately and put into the fridge. We later got a couple more boxes and they went under the tree with the other gifts. Christmas comes a couple weeks later and we unwrapped a box that I hadn’t noticed said “perishable” on the side with instructions to refrigerate. A nice big slimy room temperature spiral sliced ham. Mmmmm! Every time he called he would say, “great ham huh guys?”. We felt so guilty. We never told him it went into the trash.

One year I got this solid red cape. I wasn’t a cape person, but it was handmade, so I wore it around the house on Christmas Day… Until the giver called to ask me if I liked the tree skirt she sent me. Thank goodness I didn’t blurt out anything about the cape first.

PurpleClogs you are awesome! Even if this is a joke, Awesome.

They might have been trying to communicate to you that you were being retired from the family.
