There are some interesting suggestions on this thread. Personally, I loved “The Big Lebowski”, but I’m with ya on “Joe vs. Volcano”.
However, the one and only correct answer is “Cabin Boy”.

Ugh. Men in Tights was just bad, bad, bad. It is to Spaceballs as Star Trek V is to Star Trek II. Really, really awful stuff.
There’s no accounting for taste, I guess.
Ditto for almost every movie mentioned so far, & esp. “Ishtar”. (Beatty & Hoffman, I want my money back.)
Stoogemania
Greedy
Bonfire of the Vanities
I cant believe “Night at the Roxbury” wasnt mentioned. Hands down the worst thing ever committed to celluloid.

Movies Mentioned So Far I Like
Joe v. the Volcano
Hey, me too! I adore Joe vs. the Volcano. I have it on laserdisc (!) and everything. I even managed to read a copy of the script that had been posted on somebody’s website (perhaps in violation of copyright!), in which there were several scenes deleted from the final edit and a very different (and, in my opinion, much more fulfilling) ending.

A thread sometime ago asked for lowest box office take of a regular Hollywood film. It also turns out to be a comedy:
“It’s Pat” $35,000
All others mentioned pale by comparison $-wise. And again it’s another SNL-related movie.
<tracer hangs down his head in shame>
I … uh … I have It’s Pat: The Movie on laserdisc, too. The letterbox edition. And I’ve watched it all the way through at least twice.
But I only took an interest in it because Pat reminds me a little bit of this hermaphrodite I knew in real life – honest!
Dying is easy, comedy is difficult.
Many, many choices above qualify. Most SNL characters turned into full lenght movies are just awful. Wayne’s World (both of them) were bad, but not quite as bad as the rest.
Something About Mary, on the other hand, was gross, disgusting and comedic genius. But it might be a matter of personal taste. I have had intelligent people tell me that Dumb & Dumber was the funniest thing they ever saw, whereas I just turned it off. The funniest scene in a movie I ever saw was really two scenes in Porky’s, with the shower scene as the set up and the principal’s office as the punch line. I was sooooo close to wetting my pants in the theater.
I mentioned “Leonard Part 6” earlier[sup]1[/sup], which nobody else has said anything about. Perhaps almost everybody was smart enough to stay away. Anyhow, I just took a look at imdb’s list of 100 all time worst movies, and, to justify my choice, “Leonard Part 6” is in the 59 slot. Offhand, I don’t see any of the other movies we’ve been discussing a lot:
http://us.imdb.com/bottom_100_films
Most of those aren’t comedies. I do see “Police Academy: Mission to Moscow” at 46, beating out LP6. Many of those movies are small budget pictures that I don’t recognize, and I’m sure many other people don’t either.
It turns out that the worst on that list that imdb classes SOLELY as “comedy” is “The Wild World of Batwoman” (1966) at ninth. I have not had the (whatever) of seeing it. If it’s not clear that that’s a comedy, we have “Santa with Muscles” (1996) at number 19.
[sup]1[/sup] - I also DID mention Ishtar, quite a bit before someone said “noone’s mentioned Ishtar”, but I thought I’d let it pass. Even if what I said was that it wasn’t as bad as the reputation it got from bombing so badly at the box office. That doesn’t make it GOOD, of course.
I’ve been tabulating results, and all I can say so far is that if you mentioned any of the following as worst, you are wrong. All have SOMETHING worthwhile in them.
Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me
Delirious
Brain Smasher…A Love Story
Twins
The Big Lebowski
Something About Mary
Robin Hood: Men in Tights
Seriously, in a few days I’ll post stats on the results. There does seem to be a trend toward Lorne Michaels for Lifetime Achievement, but lots of people didn’t mark their ballots for that. I will count every movie title a Member submits, but not repeat nominations or objections from the same Member. Note: each objection to a nomination will nullify one vote for that movie.
However I reserve the right to not do anything it it seems to be a big hassle.
Most SNL-born movies rate among the worst in my book.
Count me in the group that liked Joe v. Volcano…except for the last 15 minutes, which sucked. It was intelligent & quirky until they reached that darn island when a new director must have taken over and the IQ points dropped.
I dispute the inclusion of Cabin Boy. One of my favorite comedies. Totally bizarre, easily quotable, David Letterman’s first ever film role. Great stuff, great stuff.
“Yer one of them Fancy Lads, aintcha?”
I’ll second Leonard Part 6 as almost entirely brain dead. Roger Ebert theorized that it was called “Part 6” because only the sixth movie in a franchise could be that awful.
Also, every Mel Brooks movie since Spaceballs, but especially Men in Tights. Only two good laughs in the entire movie: The musical number, and the mafia don’s sidekick.
Was Baby Geniuses supposed to be a comedy? I tried to watch it once, but kept blacking out.
yabob, I have seend The Wild World of Batwoman, and O Lord yes, it is bad. Of course, I saw it on MST3K, so I actually enjoyed it…
Oh, and WWOBW is not a comedy. At least, they weren’t trying to do comedy.
I loved Robin Hood: Men in Tights!
“Blinkin, fix you boobs…you look like a bleedin’ Picasso!”
Oh, and someone asked about a list of SNL movies, here is what I can come up with.
Blues Brothers 1&2
Mo’ Money
Waynes World 1&2
Night at the Roxbury
Stuart Saves His Family
Its Pat (worse snl movie by far)
The Coneheads
The Ladies Man (the best snl movie since BB 1)
thats all I can think of but it seems there should be more.
peace,
JB
Spaceballs is one of the funniest movies ever. So is The Big Lebowski. Joe Versus the Volcano is excellent as well; Meg Ryan is brilliant and hilariously funny in both roles. And Three Amigos is a comedic classic. jmho.
Joe Dirt did indeed suck for the first thirty minutes, but I did eventually laugh. I could have done without the great big turd meteorite halfway through the movie though.
worse comedy movie ever?
Dumb and Dumber (I cringe just thinking about it.)
Cutthroat Island (not sure if it was supposed to be a comedy or not)
Dude, Where’s my Car? (Dude, where can I get those two hours of my life back?)
any Leslie Nielsen movie made after Airplane
and my absolute worst pick: Shallow Hal. I haven’t seen it, won’t see it, and will berate it to everyone I know. Gwyneth Paltrow in a fat suit is not funny. It’s not only offensive, but it’s also intolerable as a concept that they would project ideal true beauty as a Size Two.

Having seen WWOBW on both MST3K and the uncut movie, I have to dispute that they weren’t trying to do comedy. They were trying, and failed miserably. I mean, for gods sake, the “vampires” drink “protien shakes”, and how can you forget the “chinese” ghost. So IMO Wild World of Batwoman is a comedy as well as being reeally bad.
By the way, I’ll probably be lynched for saying this, but my vote for worst comedy movie of all time goes to Tootsie. I know it was popular, and the AFI says it was one of the greatest comedies ever, but damn how bland can one movie be?

Um …
I liked Shallow Hal so much, I saw it 3 times. I don’t know what that movie did to me or why, but it’s now my official Favorite Movie of the Year [TM]. When the DVD comes out, I’ll be freeze-framing all the scenes where they show Paltrow’s extra-large body-double.
