Worst musical artists, ever?

GG Allin.

The Smiths.

Morrissey is a miserable waste of space that should never have been let out of his pretentious black walled bedroom.

It never fails!

Ask people to name the worst movie ever, and most will name a blockbuster that made hundreds of millions of dollars.

Ask people to name the worst musical artist ever, most will name a band that’s made several platinum albums.

But really, what are the odds that an extremely popular work of art or pop culture is the worst of its type ever made.

I have no use for Madonna, absolutely none, so it would be fun to say she’s the worst singer I’ve ever heard… but that would be preposterous, because I know I’ve heard HUNDREDS of MUCH worse singers in my life. It’s just that 99.99% of them never had any success. I don’t remember their names and you wouldn’t recognize their names if I DID remember.

You hate Creed or Nickelback? Fine. But you KNOW they are, at the very least, competent musicians, right? The guitarists can actually play a little, the singers can actually hold a note? Haven’t you seen or heard hundreds of bands who weren’t even THAT capable?

No way they’re the worst bands ever.

At least he didn’t shit in MY thread.

OP, who is YOUR favorite band?

I wouldn’t put Roky with that bunch. His lyrics are wierd (as befits someone known for his long battle with schizophrenia) but the music is fairly mainstream, allowing for the psychedelic tone of the times.

“You’re Gonna Miss Me” his “hit” is a pretty straightforward garage rocker.

The Shaggs on the other hand, didn’t seem to know which end of their instruments was up

My thing against Nickelback is their lyrics. They’re a competent band, but it’s like a bunch of rhyming 12 year olds sit around and say “this would be funny or cool!”

Bush is similar. I like the way their stuff sounds, but I have to shut off my brain or the lyrics make me roll my eyes. “Hey, Kurt put random phrases and words together, lets do it too!”

You’re taking this a bit personally, aren’t you?

Man, so tough to pick. Do we go with the worst Emo band or the worst Hipster band? Good Charlotte or The Moldy Peaches? Both have songs that have made me physically try to rip my ears off when I heard them. Both have done plenty to ruin American society, but CHARLOTTE gets the edge just because one of my friends successfully managed to beat up the entire band BY HIMSELF when they did a concert at U of Miami.

Rush are a terrible band. I suppose that they are technically competent, particularly the drummer, but they are anti-music. They are one of the bands that just shout “I am a virgin network administrator”. See also Weird Al and They Might be Giants. Oh, yes, they have clever lyrics! Hahhhahaha. It’s better to just dance with a person you wouldn’t mind having sex with.

So, in a roundabout kind of way I’m arguing that the Scissor Sisters I don’t feel like dancing has more joy and love and pathos and wit than the whole Rush back catalogue.

I think you’re missing the spirit of the thread, Astorian.

It would be beyond pointless for me to share that the worst band I ever heard was the band at my cousin’s wedding 14 years ago (they couldn’t crank out a decent polka if their lives depended on it).

So I - and many others, I think - interpreted the question as ‘which popular group is, in your opinion, surprisingly bad?’.

You’re taking things too literally.

(OP - correct me if I’m wrong)

mmm

Whoever wrote that d**d waste of vinyl with the lines “Accentuate the positive/Eliminate the negative.” It sounds like it was written by a mental health counselor telling people to eat and then go to the bathroom.

Please sir, may I have some more (of the story).

Ah, well if you want to go down that road, at a cousins wedding, a Bauhaus tribute band. They were pretty good, but a wedding reception doesn’t really need a version of Hollow Hills that goes on for days and days and days. Family, huh.

Agreed.

No, you’re absolutely right.

Is “d**d” a censored obscenity? 'Cause I can’t figure out what it means.

BTW, music by Harold Arlen and lyrics by Johnny Mercer.

From Wiki:
Mercer did the original recording. Covered by:
Bing Crosby with the Andrews Sisters
Perry Como
Willie Nelson
Al Jarreau
Dr. John
Kay Kayser
Artie Shaw
Connie Francis
Ella Fitzgerald
Aretha Franklin
Clint Eastwood ?!

among others.

Lou Reed FTW.

Offer me one piece of his music that has some redeemable value. People liked him because it was hip to like something so bad. At some point his proto-hipster followers hit a critical mass and to admit his music was shit meant admitting you didn’t “get” Lou’s music.

I love it too. More than “The Most Wanted Music”. Kind of scary.

Can’t speak for is solo work, but Velvet Underground was pretty good.
Cat Rapes Dog – “An Ass For A Brain”

Don’t know if it’s the worst, just thought I’d offer it up for your consideration.

Oh yeah, Deicide is pretty horrible too.

(AIM convo where he tells me the story):

F(7:40:12 PM): hey were you the one who told me that you got into a fight with good charlotte?
J (7:40:20 PM): i did
F (7:40:36 PM): what’s the story behind that?
J (7:41:57 PM): i’m sure i told you. my friend and i were drunk and they just did a show on our campus’s bball arena, we started heckling them and their fans and they came out and got in our faces
F (7:42:26 PM): so what happened?
F (7:42:30 PM): I can’t believe they even have fans
J (7:43:21 PM): one was talkin shit so i stood there laughing like an inch from his face, then my friend punched the other dude int he face and then the cops just jumped in
F (7:44:32 PM): the fan or the band/
J (7:45:35 PM): the band
F (7:54:14 PM): nice
J (7:54:32 PM): yea, it was pretty funny.

Okay, so not single-handed. But still, what a bunch of wusses, who are encouraging their fans (really, who would ever CHOOSe to be emo in the first place?) to become targets too…
