Worst musical artists, ever?

Hmm. I’ll have to go with Nickleback.

I dare you to go to one of his concerts and repeat that sentiment. It is amazing, incredibly hardcore and absolutly mindblowing. Like being given a chance to look at (or listen to) the machinery that powers the solar system.

As for worst I second Florence Foster Jenkins - but at least she had the entertainment value going for her.

I have to wonder if Bob Marley would be as popular as he is if he wasn’t a poster boy for pot.

On the nose. Nobody in the world has a voice that makes me as nunpunchy as that supreme douchebag.

Lies! There’s no way you’ve avoided Christmas Wrapping.

It’s funny, I really like Yoko Ono but I don’t bat an eyelid when people mention her in discussions like this, because I can easily see why people think that. Her work (at least the experimental stuff, the rest of her work is surprisingly pop), might be one of the ultimate “acquired tastes”.

My least favourite bands ever are Nickelback and Simple Plan.

Is that a song? I’ll Google it later to see if I’ve heard it before.

As the first person to mention Nickelback, frankly I think they’d be easier to take if they were less musically competent. Throw in utter incompetence on top of their godawful lyrics and they might at least achieve a warped novelty appeal a la the Shaggs or the “Golden Throats” records.

I think you’re missing the fact that popularity can increase a bands annoyingness exponentially. Sure, I’ve seen terrible tone-deaf garage rock bands in local clubs, and it was annoying at the time, but when I think about it now it’s kind of funny. But I can’t think back on Nickelback and think they’re funny because they just won’t go away! Every time hear them on the radio (again, CanCon laws mean I hear them a lot) I am reminded of how awful they are and that makes me hate them all over again. My hate for them grows and grows over time. So that makes them subjectively worse than any small-time club band.

Same with movies or art - if you see it once and think it’s weird, you just go on your merry way. If you see it and dislike it and then can’t stop seeing it or hearing about it or being told it’s great, you start to hate it more and more.

Agreed with Linkin Park and Nickelback, if just because I had to hear them all the time at my last job.

I also hate John Mayer, if just because “Daughters” makes me want to stab him in the throat.

OK, just listened to it. The music is still boring, but I think she sings a little bit better in this one. But damn, I had to stop it after a minute or two, and I see that it’s over 5 minutes long.

Oh, I wasn’t disputing your opinion of them – I was disputing your claim of “the only song I’ve ever heard from them are ‘I Know What Boys Like’”. There’s simply no possible way you’ve lived in an industrialized society and not had Christmas Wrapping crammed down your throat every December.

Never heard of the song, or heard it. But I’ve been turning off the radio for years, earlier and earlier each year, to avoid Xmas music.

Attack Attack is the worst shit ever. EVER. Look for their shitty song “A Stick Stickly” if you don’t believe me.

Hmm, 73 posts and no-one has mentioned William Hung.

I dare anyone to get through BrokenCYDE - Freaxxx without even a little desire to puncture your own eardrums.

I’ll confess I have not heard anything other than their hits, but I’m astounded by the popularity of the White Stripes. I honestly know many children who are much more talented drummers than Meg White. I’ve heard convoluted arguments about her “deliberately primitive” drumming, but it stinks of bullshit to me - she just lacks talent.

No one listens to the White Stripes for Meg.

I can’t disagree. Her place in the band makes a lot more sense though when you consider Jack White’s tendency to always make things harder. He plays shitty guitars, he places equipment so that it’s harder to get to. I really think he likes having a shitty drummer so he can get that raw feel he always seems to be after. Of all the bands that have won me over with their live show the White Stripes rank near the top for me (second to the Stray Cats who blew me away). I went to their show with low expectations. Meg White was exactly as I expected; Jack White, though, was the consummate showman. It was mesmerizing watching him strut and kick and and whatever-else his way about the stage while playing some wicked slide, continually engaging the audience, and just plain putting on a great show.

Meg White is an awful drummer but she suits the band.

The thing is, any night of the week, I can go out and see actually talented musicians and getting a great show as well. I have to work at it a bit, reading through the concert listings for my favorite venues and sampling songs on MySpace. I’ve discovered dozens of new bands in this way, have made friends and been thanked on their CDs. At least half of the best concerts I’ve seen have cost less than $10 for a ticket. I don’t know what you paid for White Stripes tickets, but I’m quite confident I could see at least half a dozen excellent shows for it. If they wind up playing Taste of Chicago and I can see them for free, I’ll probably go. But there is so much good music out there, played by talented musicians, that it is hard to get excited.

Sunday is Dan Tyminski (of Alison Kraus’ band) and Tuesday is Raul Malo (of the Mavericks) Wednesday is Sarah Harmer.

Meg is the perfect drummer for The White Stripes. Her and Jack, together, they fucking rock it.
