Bob Seger is the biggest whiner and braggart (occasionally at the same time- have you heard “Turn the Page”?) ever there was in pop music. Not even Lynyrd Skynyrd makes me change the station faster.
Even though he’s a legend, I somehow managed to not hear any of his music until about 3 years ago or so, and I found him to be wayyyyy overrated.
CSN(Y) paved the way for all the similar shit to follow, so they get my vote. Though I’d put The Decemberists (had to look up Colin Meloy) near the top of the list for worst “indie” bands.

Most of the posts so far seem to be mentioning overrated acts, not necessarily the worst music they’ve heard. Rush? Overrated, yes. WORST musical artist EVER? Please.
Two contenders may be Waking the Cadaver (deathcore) and Whitehouse (power electronics). Complete nonsense.
Silencer (black metal) is also worth a mention just for the vocals.
He was on one of Directv’s stations for a while and my boyfriend would turn up the volume to irritate me.
I’ll also throw in another vote for Nickelback. All of their songs sound the same to me.
The worst bands I’ve ever had the displeasure of hearing are Gwar and August Burns Red. Maybe that’s just not my style of music…if you can call it that.
Modern Talking. Also Livingston, Scissor Sisters, Black Eyed Peas (tonight’s gonna be a good AAAAARRRRGH STOP IT STOP IT) and absolutely everything that can be classified as “Volkstümlicher Schlager”.
Slight hijack, but people keep saying how Nickelback songs all sound alike. AC/DC is way more guilty of this, and yet they’re widely loved and respected. Why is it OK for them to constantly repeat themselves but not Nickelback?

Completely agree. Skimming the thread I see a lot of Nickleback nominated as worst artists ever. I’m a long way from being a Nickleback fanboy, but I’ll admit I actually do like 2-3 of their earlier songs.
But seriously you need to get out more if you think they are the worst artists ever. Nickleback produces some nice safe generic Pop Rock.

I mean, I guess if you mostly listen to music with lots of swearing and the singer being blatant, rather than double entendres and a wink wink, nudge nudge, if you know what I mean, lyrics I guess they’re nice and safe. If you mainly listen to mainstream rock stations they’re sleazy as hell.
I’ve thought of another one, but I’m not sure if it really counts, as this is less about the music itself and more about the “WTF/ this is wrong on many levels” factor: Prussian Blue.
I know, there are a lot of racist/neonazi bands, but what makes PB extra disturbing IMO is that they started so young.

For the people saying Spice Girls and Britney etc. (both of whom I love but that’s neither here nor there), I present to you “Vanilla”, a group that is roundly considered one of the worst acts of all time by pop fans who worship Spice Girls and Britney.
Remember, for every big group or singer that might annoy you, there are budget copycat acts who are infinitely worse, just not as ubiquitous.
Earlier this year I saw Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. They were supported by Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears who churned out a noise so distorted and unlistenable that my friend and I left our position near the stage to hide from the it. So unrelentingly loud and muddy was this awful mess that we assumed that the PA setup was fucked and were all set to leave. Luckily their set ended and we decided to give BBVD a song or two. They were crystal clear, far less loud and sharp as razors. They played a superb set and in retrospect we decided that Black Joe had turned in the worst performance that we had ever sat through(well stood mostly) in its entirety.
