I put this here because Kat Von D is a celebrity of sorts and it is about art. I would have went thru years of laser removal rather than do this. Apparently she’s done it to both arms also. I took a look at some pics of her tats and I didn’t think they were really bad. Her choice, of course, but I would think a professional tattoo artist like her could have come up with something better.
I don’t have instagram so it won’t let me see it, but IIRC, she got a blackout tattoo, right? Like many others, I don’t really care for them (as a coverup or otherwise), but they are a thing and they look really painful.
"PS. it’s all good if you don’t like my tattoo, because I do! I had so many old crappy tattoos that over the years I tried lasering, then covered up that it just felt like a blurry mess. Having it all blacked out so beautifully looks so clean and smooth and I love that! It’s not for everybody, but I’m just so grateful that artists like @hoode215 exist and are masters of their craft!"
According to her, the tattoos came from a time she was an alcoholic and represent nothing but bad memories. She’s chosen to get them covered up in a way that accentuates the few tattoos that have positive meanings, like the one of her dad.
Seems like she thought in through and got what she wanted. Good for her.
Well, it does give her overall skin a more consistent look…doesn’t clash with her clothes like most tattoos do. Most tatted people just look like a jumble of images and kinda messy.
Sure, after I went and found another picture for you. If you google before and after pics with her name you get a few pics of the arm blackout sleeves. Like you, I don’t much care for them. I’m surprised that people that don’t need to cover up bad work have them done.
I think I covered that in the OP when I said it was her choice. It never even occurred to me to say anything to her about it. If she didn’t want people to talk about her decision she should stop posting about it publicly.
I am also surprised that with laser removal and all the skills she and other artists have, that she opted for what she did. I’ve seen pictures of tats that were covered by new art, some that looked great, some that looked like shit. Apparently, hers still looked like shit. I wonder if she found religion along with sobriety since she’s dumping all her occult stuff too.
NSFW: Until today, I thought her and Dita Von Teese were the same person. I have to start reading People or Daily Mail to catch up on my B-list celebrities.
Blackouts are pretty cool IMO. Going one step further; some people have gotten blackouts, healed them, then “carved” precision designs out using laser.
Body modification is nobody’s business but the client’s.
She made it everybody’s interest by posting it on social media. That’s what social media is for. If she didn’t post about tattoo stuff, she’d have like six followers.
Unless you watch tattoo shows like Ink Master* or follow any tattoo pages on social media. Kat Von D is a pretty well known name in the tattoo industry.
But I’ll give you that they both have a similar look and I’m sure it’s very common for people to get them confused if they have no reason to know one from the other.
*also worth noting that she was previously married to one of the former hosts of Ink Master, Oliver Peck (as well as a few other celebs).
For me at least, the painful part was lines, because the needles they use for that are packed tightly together and it feels like they’re literally just cutting you with a knife tip (they basically are). The shading needle they use for shading and filling in is more like a bunch of needles arranged flat. It felt more numb to me than painful. But that’s just me, maybe other people experience it differently. https://tattoomachinehub.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Different-Types-of-Tattoo-Needles.jpg?ezimgfmt=ng:webp/ngcb1
Kat VD turned her LA mansion into a gothic nightmare. I knew about the red swimming
pool, but you can see on her IG how they remodeled the whole house to suit their bizarre aesthetic. Dark, gloomy, sinister even. The entire master bath was painted lacquer red even the tub. Now she’s trying to sell that house as she’s moving/moved? to another Victorian mansion in Indiana.
Here’s the listing, guess the feedback on the lacquer red bathroom was not encouraging. It’s back to white. Would love to see how the penny floor looks now. Dull and dark I’m guessing.
Is she done with tattoos? Or is white ink on black ink an option?
Yep. Shading can even be comfortable. However, I had my knees done years ago with shading needle groups, similar to what is used for blackout work. My knees were getting sunburned kayaking due to vitiligo.
My artist mixed up ink that was close to my skin tone and went over and over my knees. It hurt. And the end result is my knees look like knees, and they do not burn like they once did.
Thanks for the other sources. Instagram says “Your account has been permanently disabled because it didn’t follow our Community Guidelines. This decision can’t be reversed either because we’ve already reviewed it, or because 30 days have passed since your account was disabled. Learn more about why we disable accounts in our Community Guidelines.” This is very strange since I’ve only ever used Instagram to look at two friends’ and one artist’s feed and have never commented or posted.
TIL about tattoo needles. I always thought the only difference between the lines and shading was needle diameter. I had no idea about the multiple needles. Are you talking color tats or just the blackout?
There’s a couple of rooms that look normal. Even if you had the $12 million, you’d probably have to spend several more million on remodeling. I think I would look elsewhere.
I wonder why I can see Instagram stuff? I’ve never had an account and I see stuff on there all the time.
I have no idea. I found the Community Guidelines (well-hidden) but the only recourse seems to be to log in and follow the instructions, but because it was more than 30 days ago, there are no instructions, route for appealing, or contact link. I’ve never received any notifications from Instagram saying there was a problem, and my friends haven’t suggested that there’s something strange going on. So I dunno. /hijack
I’m sorry I’m not completely sure what you’re asking. The same techniques apply no matter the color of the ink.
The standard procedure is to, after agreeing on a design and placement, the artist will create a transfer of it and place a temporary tattoo on you. Freehand artists do exist, but at least 99.9% use the temporary tattoo and just trace, even if it’s a completely custom design. Then they do all of the outlines first, usually in black, but can be done in color if the design is “outlineless,” then the colored areas are filled in.
As you can see in that photo, the needles are different widths and shapes, used to create different effects, different line widths, fill in different sized areas, etc. Painters have different brushes, tattoo artists have different needles.
