Yes, I agree that the proper comparison is between the parties themselves. The OP thinks that the Republican Party is violent and anti-gay. If you think otherwise, dispell him of the notion.

Most of that would work for me. I’m not a fan of big government, although I do agree with a lot of other dem ideals, but the dems seem to be my only choice as **the right wing ** appears to be a bunch of crazy biggots.

So those of you who are still republicans, how do you justify it? Do you disagree with Der Thris, not in general, since that’s probably a given, but in his statement above? Is there one pet issue that keeps you with the pubs? Do you think the party will ever resemble Sam Stone’s outline? Defend your party, please.

The OP seems to be equating the right wing with the Republican Party. While I admit the the Republican Party as a whole has moved more to the right, there are many of us moderates who are trying to pull the party back to center. Witness that we nominated John McCain who (until a few months ago) was about as center as we were going to get. The fact that he beat Romney and Huckabee should tell you something.

You should keep in mind that Der Trihs has the type of mind that allows him to repeatedly wish death for all our servicemen in Iraq. And he thinks anyone who adheres to any religion is, literally, insane.

That said, in the grand scheme of things, I believe smaller government is better than big government. That taxes are a necessary evil, and that we have a moral obligation to reach our hands into other people’s pockets as little as possible. And that the more we can foster an atmosphere of personal responsibility the better it is for our society as a whole, and for the individuals who make it up.

Basically, as I’ve offered before, a society needs two things: an engine and a safety net. While both parties do understand the importance of both, the Reps focus on the former, the Dems on the latter. But I see it that the better the engine, the smaller the safety will have to be.

These conservative positions align much more with the Republican party, as fucked up as it currently is.

Perhaps. You’re certainly free to argue against the idea. My quibble is with trying to equate the Democratic Party with wholly unrelated political movements.

You don’t have to convince me. I gave up on the Republican party a long time ago, and I doubt there’s little you can say to me to interest me in it. But if you want to convince the OP, you might want to explain to him why McCain signifies moderation.
