That’s the trap of this game, trying to guess what everybody else would guess, when we’re spread all over the globe and cultures vary. I mean, those of us who answered “toaster” didn’t even consider saying “kitchen appliance” or something more generic.

I don’t think people actually give toasters as wedding gifts anymore. It’s just an old cliche that dates back to when people got married at a young age and were moving out of their family homes and setting up a household after the wedding. So you bought them basic household essentials.

Nowadays, it’s far more common for a couple getting married to have already set up their home and have all those basic essentials. So you buy them some luxury good as a gift.

I vaguely remember comedy references to banks giving out toasters when you opened an account. I have no idea where or when that happened.

The concept of a toaster for a wedding gift is an embodiment of 1950s kitsch that’s about as outdated today as “Father Knows Best”/“Leave It To Beaver”/“I Love Lucy” reruns… which is why I thought ‘21st century’ and selected ‘Keurig machine’.
