The story is fairly famous, but just in case you haven’t heard it, here’s the relevant blip:
Do you believe DeMint’s actions would have been more severe had the word been “nigger” (or some equally offensive racial slur) instead of “dike”? Do you think Allen should have been fired? (Personally I’d have fired her for stupidity if not for the comment itself.) Do you feel that Demint not firing her is an act of approbation?
I think she should have been fired for mis-spelling “dyke”. It’s easy to remember, dikes are what little boys put their fingers into and dykes are what big girls put their…
Allen should have been fired for incompetence. That’s an easy one.
If she had said “nigger” instead of “dike” [sic] she probably would have been fired.
If they were in a part of the country where the Gay vote was important to their campaign, she would have been fired.
Demint figured that it was politically more valuable to keep Allen around for whatever reason. Maybe she normally does a very good job.
I would have fired her no matter what but then if I was in politics, my views would give me a much different set of supporters than Demint’s so it would be the politically expedient thing for me to do anyway.
My main knowledge of DeMint comes from our local Fox affiliate (though I’m in Western NC, the Fox station broadcasts from South Carolina). DeMint’s opponent is saturating the airwaves–at least during the hours I’m vegging out–with ads hammering DeMint for his silly tax proposals.
I’d love to see him go down, but it’s dangerous to get too hopeful for progressive politics here in the Carolinas.
At this rate, will there be anybody left to teach in the public school system? Maybe that’s what he really wants. “Just think of all the tax money we’ll save!”
