Would illegal immigration be as big of a problem if the incentives were eliminated?

I’m sorry, Bone, do you think you’re out-logicking me?

The only reason that so many migrants are denied papers is the quota system trying to restrict legal immigration. The fantasies of folks like** doorhinge**, in which “illegal immigrant” is redefined to mean “immigrant who is a criminal,” have no bearing on the realities of immigration policy.

In the present crisis, immigrants are “illegal” because they were not permitted to migrate legally due to a quota system that vastly underestimated the economic impulses driving migration. So they did anyway, without papers, to the point that that became a social norm among otherwise law-abiding Christian persons.

Anti-immigration policy is about having fewer legal immigrants. It creates illegal immigrants. It’s all anti-immigration policy.

No - it’s a straightforward attempt to understand what you wrote. I generally find accusations of racism to be thrown around so often for a great variety of things in a way that weakens other actual claims of racism. In this thread, you started off implying that being anti illegal immigration was racist. It took several attempts asking you to clarify for you to do so.

I grant there are many people in this country that fit the description you give. There are also those like the person in SF who killed someone who has been arrested and deported multiple times and still found his way back into the country.

That’s why I asked you another direct question, to clarify what your thoughts are. I think one can be anti illegal immigration for non-racist reasons, either direct or indirect as you previously defined. What do you think?

Once we’ve established that that possibility exists, then the burden falls on the one making the claim that the intentions are racist to demonstrate it. I think it’s easy to find examples of course. It’s hardly an indictment of sentiments of anti illegal immigration however. It is the current law of the land, supported by the weight of the justice system however flawed that may be. For anti illegal immigration to be racist even in a significant minority of instances, then the entire system of laws, elected officials, and the judicial system would also need to be racist. It’s a bold claim, and would require robust evidence. Thus far you’ve presented little.

I have absolutely nothing against those who want to come to this country for a better life for themselves or their families. If it was the best option for me, I would do it too without hesitation. Simultaneously, we are a nation of laws which should be enforced. Laws against illegal immigration are not unjust. Every country has a right to set its own immigration policy.

I see you do purposely conflate legal and illegal immigration. That’s unfortunate.

Christian persons? Why do you ignore Muslims, Sikhs, Jews, and atheists? Are they somehow exempt from being “illegal” aliens?

Of course legal immigration is restricted. :smack: Potential immigrants wait in line and are admitted in an orderly, and “legal” manner. “Legal” immigrants are always welcome. “Illegal” immigrants, according to U.S. law, are suppose to be sent back packin’.

The “illegal” immigrant who chooses to break U.S. laws is a law-breaker. They choose to break the laws of the U.S… Kathryn Steinle was murdered because Francisco Sanchez, an “illegal” alien and known criminal who had been convicted of seven felonies, sought out the sanctuary city of San Francisco? Why? Because SF welcomes law-breaking, criminal, “illegal” aliens. Why? According to the leadership of SF’s government, it’s because they make the city safer. :smack:

Anti-immigration policy is about having fewer legal immigrants. It creates illegal immigrants. It’s all anti-immigration policy.

This statement is classic newspeak. Is it your intention to remove all U.S. immigration laws? If immigration laws create “illegal” aliens, then laws making bank robbery and rape “illegal” also create bank robbers and rapists.

No they are not. Legal immigrants are welcome if and only if they meet certain very stringent conditions. It’s not like you can just fill out the papers and wait. Even for educated, talented people, it’s often just not possible.

Yes, they are welcome if they meet the needs of the country they’re attempting to emigrate to. They are not welcome if their first act of moving to a new country is to break the laws of that country. And they’re definitely not welcome if they’ve already proven to be felons, and repeat felons, in their new country.
