I am finally considering getting a car. Some people say I should get a hatchback it’s easier to park (considering I am totally a newbie driver), and more economical in things like fuel consumption (oil here is more expensive).
The problem is, I don’t really like the look of hatchbacks, they look immature and femines. I searched online and apparently there is steretype of it being associated with chicks and gay people.
Don’t get me wrong here I am not against any group of people. I am simply seeking an opinion. I don’t want to be laughed at (or be secretly laughed at behind my back or whatever). It’s a big purchase for me lots of $$$$$ too much money involved so definitely don’t want to regret over a purchase as major as this.
Having sex with or being exclusively attracted to a member of the same sex as you
If its neither of these two, then its not gay.
People are going to say what they say. Bugger (!) them and do what you want.
Longer answer: No, but apparently some people might think this (although TBH it’s the first I’ve ever heard of it). If that bothers you, then don’t buy one because you’ll be constantly worried about what people are thinking of you and you won’t enjoy it. If you can learn to ignore the prejudices of ignorant people, then just buy whatever car is going to suit you best.
Can anyone give me non-PC, non-prep talk, purely objective answer? I just need to know what’s the general sentiment of the society. Believe it or not, other people’s opinion do matter. If not, why don’t you wear a gorilla suit in public? Or naked? I mean, it’s not like I even like having to decide between a hatchback and a sedan, I don’t like having to make choices, I am not a guy who enjoys shopping. Just want some real answers no phoby pre-talks please.
No, no and no. The sort of people who worry about such things don’t have opinions worth listening to. The only thing that matters is how good the car is. Does it suit your needs? Are the running costs acceptable?
If it bothers you that much then don’t buy a hatchback. I and many friends, family and colleagues have had hatchbacks and they’ve been of all persuasions, but if it bothers you that much just buy something else. There are thousands of cars to choose from.
There’s no “general sentiment” in society about drivers of hatchbacks. The majority of people couldn’t care less what car you drive, and make no opinion on you as a person because of it.
But there’s no car you can buy that some idiots won’t judge you for. It’s possible some idiots might think you’re gay for driving a hatchback. Other idiots will think you’re a dirty polluter for buying a truck or SUV. Other idiots will think you must have tiny genitalia if you buy a sports car. And even other idiots will think you’re a spoiled snob for driving a luxury/premium car. Even a four door sedan will cause some idiots to think you’re a boring nerd. And these can be all mixed up – idiots are idiots and have idiotic thoughts, and some idiot might think you’re boring for driving a hatchback, and others might think you’re gay for driving a pickup truck.
If the possibility that someone might think you’re gay really, really bothers you more than these other possibilities, then that’s probably something you should try and fix inside yourself – there’s nothing wrong with being gay, and it doesn’t matter if some stranger thinks you might be gay. It won’t affect you at all unless you let it. I am a straight man and I couldn’t care less if a stranger (or even an acquaintance or friend) thinks I’m gay.
I was going to comment along these lines. I’ve hear of Miatas or VW Beatles and Cabriolets as being “chick cars,” but I’ve never heard of any stereotype associated with hatchbacks.
Anyone who thinks how the OP describes is an idiot. OP, if you prefer pandering to stupid mouth breathing idiots, that’s your prerogative. Avoid a certain type of car if you think you need to. Just don’t tell anyone why, or they’ll think you’re gay.
I’ve found them useful for carrying stuff, I found them very much less desirable for storing stuff that one may way to conceal as not to encourage breakin’s and theft. I have never associated them with women or gay men. They have a certain utilitarian look for their size (utilitarian tends more to male to me). I would more likely associate a small car (with a trunk) as a woman’s vehicle, I have no idea what car style I would associate with a gay man’s vehicle.
