If not, why not.
I think it’d add a new dimension to the game, and maybe some already play like this. Regardless, I want your thoughts anyway.
Simple new rule;
However many people fold that round is how many cards (plus 1) are burned before the next card(s) are placed face up in the center of the table. Minimum being always one. If one person folds then two cards are burned, if two people fold then three cards are burned…etc.
I like the idea because it allows a folder to somewhat control the outcome of the cards and it also allows a better to force others to fold changing what cards he/she would have gotten. Adds a twist to a fairly rigid game.
It will make absolutely no difference in the game, assuming no one is cheating. As a matter of fact, I tend to get annoyed when people arbitrarily (i.e. without a pre-set rule like you are discussing,) do stuff like you are saying, but in this case, if it was a party atmosphere and I’d played with the guy for years, I’d have no problem if he wanted to burn 1, 2 or 5 cards with no prior explanation, let alone based on the number of folders. I just don’t think it adds anything if you are not already suspected of cheating (then again I dont think burning a card in general adds anything but whatever.)
Now if the burnt cards were revealed to all, it might make things interesting…
…what the previous posters said. Can you explain WHAT benefit it would be “to allow a folder to somewhat control the outcome of the cards?” If a player didn’t know what cards he was getting before hand, he still won’t know. What difference does it make if the players now see the 4th card after burning three, than when he saw the 2nd card after burning a single card?
If you’re REALLY interested in changing the rules to the game without changing the underlying premise or adding all these weird variations, try this:
community cards come out 2, 2, 1 instead of 3, 1, 1. It’s a very subtle change but will make a huge impact on the process of betting and sticking around in a hand.
I know, but there is still a difference. Instead of someone getting the fourth card from the top they may be getting the fifth or sixth. It only will matter in the head of the person who chooses to think about it. Otherwise I agree, it won’t make a difference. Just a way to change things up a little, or to further thwart cheating.
It’d thwart cheating by anyone other than the folder, since the cheater wouldn’t know how many cards would be burned, but it would enable a type of cheating by the folder himself which isn’t possible now. I’d call it a wash.
And it’ll only matter in the head of the person who chooses to think about it, if that person isn’t very good at thinking about it. Any person who thinks correctly about it will see that the burned cards make no difference whatsoever, assuming no cheating.
My personal variation on Hold 'em is called Split Pineapple. People are familiar with Pineapple- you get three hole cards, and discard one before the flop. In Split Pineapple, you get four holecards, and discard one before the flop and one after.
Great fun.
I don’t see the point of your idea, US - if the bettor doesn’t know what card is coming it won’t make a damn bit of difference to him how many cards are burned.
This is equivalent to the old woman sitting next to me at the blackjack table claiming I “took the dealer’s bust card!” because I took a card when she didn’t think I should.
How many cards are burned has nothing to do with the result.
Now crossing the path of a black cat or walking on the cracks in the sidewalk - that is serious!:smack:
This reminds me a a M:tG card called Puzzle Box. When it’s played, every player has to shuffle their deck. It’s totally pointless, but on the other hand it sure is annoying.
Maybe we played by slightly different rules, but we always kept the unplayed cards and the discarded cards separate. And the unplayed cards were always shuffled.
The cards sent to the bottom of the deck (Library) are not the same as discarded cards (Graveyard). It has to do with manipulating one’s Library, and there are many such cards. One of my favorite cards, Mirri’s Guile, allows the manipulation of the top of the deck each turn.
To the OP, there is no “twist” with this dealing method. Sorry.
