In what way? It’s completely destroying Britain’s economy, at the least.
He’d screw it up, find that he can’t declare bankruptcy, and then quit.
The kindest thing that can be said about your statement is that it’s irresponsible hyperbole.
It is true that the UK’s economy MAY be headed towards a recession, but–
He certainly would survive.
The leftist stench is strong in this thread…
The UK hasn’t actually Brexited. This is like predicting that it will be cold when winter comes, then taking the temperature in July, and going, “Nope, I guess not.”
Of course, if Brexit does happen, there are a lot of paths down which it could go, so any prediction is going to be pretty questionable. But, many paths probably do lead to steady marginalization over the course of years and decades. And again, you wouldn’t be able to detect that in a few weeks, let alone before the thing actually happened.
Sorry, but I see a vast gulf between what Trump may have said and what Trump would actually follow through on.
Assume Trump made the same promise to Pence and they get elected. What do you think will happen the first time Pence does something Trump doesn’t agree with? Do you really think Trump will feel bound by his promise? Or when Trump just feels bored with the ceremonial stuff and decides he wants to be hands on? Or when the press starts saying Pence is the real President and Trump’s ego kicks in?
This is out of line for this forum. Don’t use personal insults here.
There are other threads for general discussion of Brexit. Please drop the hijack here.
In fact, I speculated the day Pence was named (in this forum) that it was Trump’s intention all along to just get inaugurated (for his own puffery), and wanted to have a credible statesman to turn the office over to when he got bored with it after a few months. In other words, he didn’t want to BE president, he wanted to appoint the president. I still have no reason to believe otherwise.
It is possible Trump may survive a full term but a more realistic scenario may be, would we survive?
I think it’s very unlikely he would resign or be assassinated, if elected. There’s really no reason for him to resign, and I think that the people who protect the physical security of the President are professional and effective.
He might be quite unpopular. I expect he would be sort of a figurehead president with the actual governing being done by Pence, except for sporadic fanfare to show that he’s the head honcho. As long as the rest of the GOP kowtows to him, he’ll let them get most of what they want. For that reason, I expect an impeachment to be unlikely, although I’m less confident in that prediction.
I expect that cronyism would be a huge problem with his administration, given how he tends to prioritize loyalty and personal support over pretty much everything else.
Pence seems more like the Republican party’s pick than Trump’s. He seems like the sort of person that Trump would choose in order to get the party’s backing, than because he wants to be able to decide who should lead the country.
I also might note that Pence seems like the exact worst sort of Republican. Trump’s ideas might seem fascist and horrendous, but they’re all stupid enough that you don’t really have to worry about them becoming law. Pence’s ideas are also really creepy and horrible, but could actually become law. Of the two, I’d rather Trump in the President’s seat than Pence.
If Trump does get elected, hopefully the Cabinet will invoke the 2/3+VP rule and boot him out.
As I said in my previous post, I’d be much more fearful of Pence in the big seat than Trump.
Trump will spend 4 years being told he’s an idiot and being ignored by the legislature.
Pence might actually get some laws passed.
