What exactly are you afraid of? What ‘bad things’ do you think are going to happen to you if you share a shower with a gay man?
You can’t actually catch it, you know…

My answer is no, but the key word is “person”, not “gay”. I just don’t like shared locker/dressing/bathrooms in general, and when I was in summer camps I’d in fact go out of my way to shower during “off” hours when I could use the handicapped shower stall (because those had room to undress, shower, and dress without being seen). For those who want to look at me funny for using the handicapped stall despite not being handicapped (unless you count severe body image issues as “handicapped”), don’t worry, there weren’t actually any handicapped people at the camps.
I’m a gay guy and I can say I’m just as uncomfortable with it as you are. So don’t worry. Most of us feel this way, from chatting with my friends about it. We want to change and get out of the locker room as fast and as incident free as possible. And if an attractive guy ever DID try to hit on me in the locker room, I’d be extremely embarrassed and want to get out of there asap, no matter how hot he was. It’s just totally inappropriate and has nothing to do with sexual orientation or attraction. What I’m saying is, guys getting turned on and finding you attractive isn’t anything weird to feel uncomfortable about. It’d be weird for me too, as a gay man.
Have I ever seen an attractive guy in a locker room? Absolutely. But I’ve never stared or done anything to make him feel uncomfortable or that I even acknowledged his existence.
Also if you ever did have a voluntary straight male locker room vs gay male locker room, a lot of gay guys like me are just going to use the straight locker room because the gays who would voluntarily use a gay locker room are probably going to be looking to cruise.
I had a bi friend at one point who did, in fact, ask me out. But that didn’t involve a locker room or any state of undress, we were just hanging out at the time. Obviously I turned him down because I’m straight, but I’m totally fine with guys finding me attractive or whatever. It was kind of flattering to be honest. I was just pointing out that for me locker room = uncomfortable, regardless of the orientations involved.
Then you’re either going to have to get over it or go shower somewhere else. You still have offered no reason why gyms should go out of their way to cater to a minority of hysterical homophobes. “It makes me feel uncomfortable to think about gay people looking at my junk” is not actually a compelling argument in the real world.
Now pay attention people, this is a calm, rational response.
He doesnt get mad or offended. I bet this guy is propably pretty cool in person too.
I wish there were more of Drew, this forum would be a better place
LMAO
What a great idea. I didnt think of that.
Although I’m not sure every locker room comes with a handicapped shower stall here in Toronto
Back in the old days, when I was young, I was hit on in locker rooms more than a few times. Apparently the locker rooms of college pools were popular crusing places back then. It was surprising and icky to be going about your business of undressing and to find some guy standing way too close making grabbing motions or even trying to touch. All these years later I still can’t decide what I should have done. Report them? Punch them in their leering faces? Or just feel dirty and stay away from that pool, which is what I eventually did.
Yet today I don’t even think about whether the men in the locker room are gay or straight. Those guys who hit on me and made me so uncomfortable were assholes who just happened to be gay. So, in the locker room, I watch out for the jerks who can’t seem to learn appropriate behavior. There are plenty of those in every orientation.
You wish there were more of him everywhere but the locker room, amirite?
What was your first clue??
That your homophobia was showing from your OP?
You mean what I posted on page 1: http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showpost.php?p=16418532&postcount=1
Thank you Captain Obvious
.
That’s what an OP is called, genius. But the difference is, you stated you were only slightly homophobic, that has to be the biggest misrepresentation of facts I’ve seen on this message board this week. So, thanks for the under-sell.
I am gay and if I go into a locker room I will find a place where no one is so I don’t have to see anyone and no one will see me.
Before then. I think the double question marks in the title sort of gave it away.
LMAO…is the fact you think I’m a homophobe imply some sort of insult and is supposed to bother me?!
It’s not working
.
Couldn’t care less about the sex or orientation of people with whom I change or shower at an athletic centre or a or sauna.
Ever notice how those preachers who rail against gays are often times the ones who are caught in a motel room with a man, caught hiring an male escort to carry their bags?
The word is out, men that are all paranoid about gays are usually dealing with that very internal struggle themselves. That’s what’s fueling the ill feelings.
Esco, is there something you need to tell us?
Yes, I’m not a preacher nor do I have anything against the gay lifestyle.
Everyone should be free to have sex with whom they want, as long as its consensual.
Oh, and last time I saw 2 guys making out in the street I almost puked. Does that answer your question??
.
I’m sure there’s not a single person reading this thread that thought you would find being called a raging homophobe an insult. That’s why it’s so freaking hilarious. So we can have pity on you and your kind who “puke” at the sight of what normal gay people do, all the while knowing that as time progresses, you’ll just be forced to deal more and more with the thing you’re so afraid of.
Now I’ll wait eagerly for your next thrilling and insightful post to tell me that you’re not afraid of gay people, blah blah blah reinforcement of the crap you’ve been spewing since you started this thread. Please, do continue do you’ll keep us entertained.
