I have a diamond setter friend, and one idea to profitably exploit his skills was to modify an iPod nano with diamonds. We went through with it, and here’s the results: My Files What do you guys think? I’ll be putting it on Ebay soon so the question of whether anyone will buy will be objectively settled soon enough, but I’m wondering if you guys think this was a good idea to start with. I’m hoping to sell it for $400-$600. Also I need your opinion if the photos came out well or if I should take some more.
How can you convince me they’re real? I would assume they are fake and essentially nothing you can say will make me believe that they are real until I have it in hand and had the diamonds tested. Certificates would be useless as you can easily fake them. It looks cool, but I would stay away from it on the assumption you are ripping me off using a “fake diamond” trying to pass it off as real.
Thats what I was thinking. You’d be better off using Cubic Zirconia and being upfront about it with purchasers. Their friends probably can’t tell the difference, and it’s all about bling, right?
No, even if if knew they were real, I wouldn’t be interested.
I can’t get your link to work. It shows me a bunch of different things and I am not about to go randomly clicking on things.
That being said, WHY? Why an iPod with diamonds? No, I’d never buy one.
If I had a bunch of spare cash, maybe, but for real? No.

While I think iPods are nifty, they look flimsy and not at all something I’d associated with precious gems. It’s something I’d be likely enough to replace after a while, just like my computer, and I sure wouldn’t want my computer studded with diamonds, either.
I know some people who’d like iPods with bling on them, though. These are the type of people who might also put glittery nail polish on their cell phones and, thus, might not really care if they’re diamonds, Cubic Zirconia, or plastic sequin decals.
Good luck, though. It does look nicely done.
Yeah, I’m guessing for the next one I’ll take it down a notch and use cubic zirconia, or take it up a notch and make a full gold case instead of putting them directly in. The shadow of fake diamonds is a bitch, but don’t people want the idea of the real thing? Or it just that they do want the real thing, but just won’t believe these ones are real? My Ebay rating is good, I’ve sold over a dozen $1000 items in the last few months.
I could picture a guy buying that to try to impress his girlfriend.
Personally, though, if I were going to buy something like that, I’d prefer to get one with cubic zirconia instead, both because ipods are not meant to last forever and because I wouldn’t want to have to worry about the diamonds falling off if I were walking around with it.
I personally would not buy one–not really my thing. But I think the way you did it was tasteful and quite elegant, and it does look pretty cool in my opinion. I’m sure there are some people out there who want to bling up their ipods, so good luck with that!
No, I wouldn’t. It’s a pointless waste of money.
The case sounds better: more adaptable.

I think it looks nice- not at all tacky (like I was expecting! And not hot pink…). But I wouldn’t have one for myself- I’d wreck it.
I didn’t see anybody comment on how the photos turned out so I’ll give my thoroughly amateur opinion.
I liked the near-is-in-focus far-is-out-of-focus effect on the one.
I am guessing you had the flash on because in most of the pictures the diamonds look like white spots even on the largest files. Try turning off the flash and moving your iPod somewhere well-lit and taking the picture there. See if you can get an even tighter closeup of the diamonds. In a couple of the pictures, you could see dust on the mp3 player, you might want to wipe it down with a lint-free cloth.
Your friend probably knows a thing or two about the best way to photograph jewelry, ask his advice.
Cute puppy, BTW.
Even if I were as wealthy as Bill Gates, I have to believe I would have better things to spend my money on.
So, no.
There are too many circumstances when you have to send your iPod into Apple for service. No way I would buy one, because it essentially makes the iPod unserviceable.
A case, though, would be a whole different thing. I wouldn’t buy one, buy I think plenty of people would – if they’re not suffering in the current economy.
No. Ninety-nine percent of the time, my iPod is not in view – in the glove box of my car (where the cable that connects it to the car stereo is), my purse, or a pocket. About the only time it’s out where anyone can see it is when I’m syncing it. What’s the point of having a diamond iPod or case if no one can see it and thereby envy me for me good (:dubious:) taste and fat wallet?
No. Apart from the fact it looks ridiculous, its value would only depreciate, and I’d have a hard time looking my friends in the eyes after I told them what I paid for it, where exactly would I use it?
At home I usually listen to music on my computer, and I don’t think I’d feel comfortable listening to it on the train, which I take twice a day. I like to think people are honest, but a diamond-studded “whatever” might prove too much for a lot of them, or at least enough for it to be a real concern.
So, to sum up: NO.
Honestly, I think the problem you’re going to run into is that there’s probably an infinitesimally small market of people who want TASTEFULLY blinged-out iPods.
