If your worst enemy in the world approached you to ask if you’d be willing to settle things honorably by way of a duel to the death (using pistols of your choice), would you be willing to give it a shot if no one else were to know of it?
As far as I’m aware, dueling – an honorable way of settling grudges – is outlawed. But who’s to say that it couldn’t make a comeback in this day and age when so many people are eaten alive with anger?
Yes, but I wouldn’t use guns. For the purpose of defending one’s honor, they just seem to lack the grace, or whatever, that I would want. Instead, I would prefer to use a rapier.
OTOH, I don’t feel dishonored by anyone enough to think that killing them would be necessary. But, it would be nice if two concenting adults could just sign a legally binding contract and just have at it, no?
What do you mean by “no one else were to know of it?” Does that mean no witnesses? 'Cause if so, I’d totally shoot him in the back as he’s pacing away.
What? He’s my sworn enemy; I obviously hate him for a reason…
Swords no, pistols yes. Weren’t most true dueling pistols pretty pathetic at any range? I have heard they weren’t even meant to kill although the occasional person might. I would rather have a small bullet wound than a hand chopped off or something from a sword. I’m not good with swords anyway.
Is it that he tries to kill or otherwise serious harm members of my immediate family? Then maybe I’d be willing to settle it that way, if for some reason law enforcement were not an option.
Is it that he keeps me from getting promoted at work? Then no.
Is it that he changes the channel when I’m watching TV?
Only if I thought I could cheat and kill him without much personal risk. And no, I wouldn’t feel guilty about cheating; if killing someone isn’t important enough to you that you are willing to break the rules of a game, then you shouldn’t be going so far as to kill them in the first place.
IIRC trichinosis was incurable then and while death was not certain, a life of pain was guaranteed. My favorite reason why to choose this (now with a disease that is not curable today) is that I expect the opponent, like Bismark, will call the duel off as he thought the choice of weapons was too gruesome.
Dueling is not and never has been honorable. Dueling was nothing but legal sanction to professional bullies. Its history is horrendous, and it was outlawed everywhere for very good reason, IMO.
Dueling is like giving control of the Dope to the fastest typers and eliminating the mods.
Sir, the proper use of a duel is not to “settle a grudge”. It is to answer an affront to one’s honor. So duelling secretly is nothing more than common thuggery.
The point is not to kill your opponent – although often that happens. The point is to demonstrate that as a gentleman your good name means more to you than life itself and that your word is backed by your blood. This means that the act MUST be performed PUBLICLY … albeit often with a modicum of subterfuge to prevent the meddlesome authorities from intervening … .
Hmmm…depends on the enemy. Maybe if it was someone I really wanted dead, but that I thought I had at least a chance of winning against.
Like, say, if it was a serial killer who’d been stalking my family, I’d be willing to take a stab at 'em. But if it were a serial killer who happened to be a target pistol champion…well, that’d be kind of pointless, wouldn’t it?
I guess I just wouldn’t want to stake my life and honor on pure luck (unless I had a death wish, and/or had something I really wanted to prove). Skill…maybe.
However I don’t think I currently have any enemies with anyone worth killing. I don’t have a whole lot in the way of morals or ethics or whatever those thingamabobbies are called, but I do take my killing seriously.
If I did, see above.
