Would you go to Hell for your SO?

Assume for the purpose of this thread that there is both a Heaven of eternal bliss, and a Hell of eternal torture. For reasons unknown you make it to Heaven…but your SO doesn’t. God says that, if you wish, you can make an irrevocable trade with your SO. Would you do it?

May we assume that the two “no” votes without comments are from those who have SOs that read the SDMB?

Brain lock.

Every time I run this, the game goes into an infinite loop.

Base answer without games: yes.

Gamed answer: By making that sacrifice, all the standard evaluations of God would say that action would save me as well. But by thinking of that, I negate the “act of sacrifice” sending me right back to Hell. But my wife would make the same deal, swapping us back and forth for Eternity.

Re: Spoiler. One time only, no backsies.

If I didn’t make the trade, I wouldn’t deserve to be in Heaven anyway.

I’m pretty sure I’d fight the hypothetical.

Notice I didn’t put down “other” as a poll choice? That’s the reason.

It’s an internet poll, not a binding supernatural covenant. Pick the answer that makes you feel best about yourself.

Me, I’d swap and on the way down, I’d save a runaway bus of orphans, feed a homeless man and find a child’s lost puppy.

If things play out the way those who believe in heaven/hell believe it will, I’d be around a bunch of strangers in heaven. Yes, I’ll go to hell.

I did. I chose not to vote.

I voted yes-she definitely deserves it more than I do.

You left out “been there.”

Yes. Her happiness means more to me than my own. Also, I’ve got a score to settle with at least one hell-bound person, as I mentioned in [thread=676163]this rather NFSW Pit thread[/thread].

If I am to assume Heaven and Hell exist and they are run by an Infallible God, then no, she definitely doesn’t deserve it more than you do.

An infallible God wouldn’t have send my SO to hell unless they deserved it. So I’m guessing my SO was acting like a Ted Bundy or a Charles Manson and I didn’t know about it, so no, I’m not swapping.

Yes, she definitely deserves it more than you do. :stuck_out_tongue:
AIUI:
(a) There is no way I can be anyone’s substitutory sacrifice - that position’s already filled.
(b) There is no possible eternity in which anyone gets to hang around in Hell with their mates and actually get anything positive at all out of the experience.

That’s what I was thinking, too. Accepting the Heaven and Hell and God stuff as 100% true for the hypothetical, then by definition someone who is sent to Hell instead of Heaven not only doesn’t deserve to go to Heaven more than a person who was sent there, they do not deserve to go to Heaven at all.

As you said, he deserves it more than I do. And heaven wouldn’t be heaven without him anyway.

If by some cosmic bookkeeping error I ended up in Heaven and my Wife or daughters did not, I would storm the metaphorical gates to get them out, or to join them.

I may have voted no by accident, but I meant yes. It won’t be heaven without my wife, and a God who would send her there is the devil in disguise anyway.

Incidentally, Czarcasm, were you thinking of a Job: A Comedy of Justice type scenario, or a What Dreams May Come type?
