Would you hire this man as your IT specialist?

Scott Fendley, an IT security analyst for the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, lost much of the work he had done on his master’s thesis after the Witty worm took down his computer on Saturday.

This would be sad if it weren’t so funny. Would you hire this man for your security department? Someone who stores the only copy of his master’s thesis on a single computer with no backup? Isn’t the concept of redundancy taught in Computer Concepts 101 anymore?

I wonder what the title of his thesis is. “101 ways to prevent data loss”?

Maybe his thesis was titled, “A 100% effective defense against Internet worm programs.”

He had several backups, which he shredded himself after the worm trashed the PC.

While we’re on the subject of destroying stuff, didja hear about the Wisconsin Governor’s records that went to the shredder by “accident”?

The state attorney general is investigating the destruction of several hundred boxes of former Republican Governor Tommy Thompson’s records and other state records…The records were supposed to go to the state historical society. Instead they were put on a truck bound for a Green Bay paper mill, which recycled them into pulp. The administration says it was an unfortunate mistake.
