Would you rather get $1 million or three random superpowers?

One of the powers that came up for me was:

Circadian Manipulation - (The power to control the movement and rotation of planets.)

JFC, there is no way that any use of that doesn’t have apocalyptic consequences, and just knowing myself capable of it would make me suicidal. And that’s assuming nobody else knows I can do that.

I’ll take the money, thank you all the same.

$1 million is really not much. I SCORED!!
Bone Manipulation

(The power to manipulate bones.) Famous healing surgeon/doctor!

Mass Manipulation

(The power to manipulate the mass of objects or entities.) Raise the collapsed bridge? Here, let me lighten the load.

Power Randomization

(The ability to have any random powers at any time.) I’m a “power to do good person.” The evil villain trap is lack of awareness. First pick wisdom, then switch on the power to create/improve/educate …

I picked the powers, and actually got them!
Probability Perception
(The power to perceive the probability of anything.)

Sedation Inducement
(The power to tranquilize organisms into a somnolent state.)

Paralysis Inducement
(The power to render organisms immobile.)

I can already do these things.

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz… .

I was thinking the same thing until i read the description. . . 'cause man alive, computing cross products in my head would be really useful at work. . .

Tripler
I could also grease that squeaky door hinge for you just by looking at it.

I’m happy with the random powers I got, assuming there are other people with superpowers.

  • Social Cloaking - Power to instantly assimilate into any society or social group.
  • Power Absorption - The power to absorb or steal powers from others.
  • Probability Perception - The power to perceive the probability of anything.

The first superpower I was assigned I didn’t even understand what the hell it was, so I’ll take a million bucks.

Are you kidding? You could make a fortune with all 3!

Erm, you could solve crimes with ease, you could answer burning archeological questions, you could find missing people or buried treasure… not all of these are asy to monitize but you could definitely make the world a better place and make money doing it.

Fight crime?

If having your mind overloaded can be found pleasurable in any way - and I’m sure there are people somewhere who would be into that - then that’s an avenue for making money.

You really need this one spelled out?

I’ll take the roll.

I got:

Atomic Vision (the ability to see the bonds between atoms)

Affinity (gain strength from something, or when something happens)

Social Cloaking (blend instantly into any group of people)

Affinity seems pretty useless. What kind of strength do I gain, and when? No clue.

However, between Social Cloaking and Atomic Vision, I should be able to slip into the community of particle physicists, and win a couple Nobel prizes.

Me too, most likely. Of course, in our case, we’re in our 60s, have been saving for years, and this would let us a) pay off the house, b) sock away a bit more in the 401(k), and c) take a big trip somewhere.

If I were 10 years younger, my answer might be quite different. Ditto if we did not have a lot of savings.

My 3 superpowers are actually pretty useful. Supernatural reflexes (hoping this might mitigate my terminal klutziness), supernatural senses better vision / hearing? Guess we’d need to move somewhere quieter, and thermal resistance (hey, global warming is a thing, plus think of the savings on our air conditioning bill).

I went with the random super powers and got:

  • Enhanced Swordsmanship
  • Prehensile Tail
  • Atmospheric Adaptation

So, at least I can rest assured I won’t accidentally cut my own tail off if I get tear-gassed.

Mine was like a three wishes story.

Prehensile tail. Yah, that’s useless. Say goodbye to having a social life. Or being about to sit down. And I’ll need an entire new wardrobe.

Reality manipulation. OK, now we’re talking., My first manipulation of reality is to get rid of than damned prehensile tail!

I’ll take the money.

But if you WANT To cut your tail off, you’ll do it perfectly!

Mine:

Mind Exchange
(The power to switch minds with other beings.)

Season Manipulation
(The power to manipulate seasons and the concepts they represent.)

Literary Manipulation
(The power to manipulate literary objects.)

Checking, literary manipulation allows you to trap people in books.

I’m having a hard time seeing how this isn’t going to be used for evil purposes, and be worth lots more than a million.

Mind Exchange is definitely evil. I can’t really think of a positive use, just stealing bodies to live forever.

(Maybe you could be an animal actor for Hollywood? Get two cages, put a tiger in one, step into the other; swap minds with the tiger; perform compex roles for a movie with no training needed; then swap back).

This OTOH wpuld be immensely useful and could make you very rich. Just charge farmers for rain, or go turn the Sahara green.

Insider trading with ease without being an insider.

And hope the tiger hasn’t done something horrible while in your body. Might need to be either heavily restrained or actively sedated.

Hence the cage. But if you’re worried that the tiger might hurt your body while inside, then yeah, sedation seems like a good idea.

The money, no question! I understand how money works and know that it is useful for many different things, and while one can do stupid and self-destructive things with a million dollars, I also understand what those things are and how to avoid them. I don’t want to take my chances on some totally unknown power that nobody else has and nobody, including me, understands.

But, just to see what I would have gotten…

Poison Generation (pretty much what it says on the tin)
Possession (the power to inhabit the bodies of other beings / entities)
Enhanced Strength (also what it says on the tin).

Feeling pretty good about my choice – two of them are in the “My God, I’m not enough of a sociopath to even think about using that” category, and the third, while more or less benign, also isn’t something I particularly want or would find useful.

Many poisons have medical uses. You could work for a hospital! After all, “the dose makes the poison”.
