This is a poll. However, like most polls that are about CS things, it’s hard to know if it’s best here or in IMHO. I’ve put it here for now but if a mod feels it’s better suited for the other forum, no complaint from me.
Anyway, I was just curious; would you say you’ve read more books or watched more movies in your life so far? At first asking myself this question this morning, I immediately thought “read more books.”
But thinking about it now, I’d have to say that’s a toughie for me. Both are about equal, I’d say. I watch a whoooole lot of movies but on the other hand, I’ve read a whooooole lot of books.
I think movies may win out just a bit, though.
By the way…movie here is defined as a movie longer than 90 minutes.
Book is any book more than 250 pages.
Books. Definitely books. Given a couple of hours, I could list all the movies I’ve seen in my life. I couldn’t begin to remember all of the books that I’ve read. (I do remember the *covers *of the books I’ve read, so I detest reprints with new covers.)
It’s no contest really. I’ve seen thousands of movies in my life. I can watch a movie in 1.5 to 3 hours. There are very few books that I can read that fast (even if I could I probably wouldn’t really enjoy it much).
I read a lot of books but I can watch a couple of movies every day if I want and there’s just no way to do that with books (for me at least).
But I’d like to point out that it really isn’t my fault. The closest my parents ever had in the house to a book was TV Guide, so I grew up watching movies. I don’t own a TV anymore, so I assume one of these days I am bound to catch up.
Mine are probably about even. As a kid, I wasn’t allowed to watch movies much, but I read voraciously. Literally every time we went shopping, I got a book as a treat. On top of that, we went to the library weekly and my pile was a consistent 10 books (actually, it HAD to be 10 books, so Mom knew if any were missing when they went back. Sometimes I’d grab an old friend if I only had 9 new ones, to make up the difference.) I had well over 5000 books I had to cull when I moved out of my mother’s home. Nearly every wall of her house has bookshelves on it.
Now, while I still read a lot, I find myself re-reading more than reading new works, so my list of titles hasn’t grown terribly dramatically in years. And somewhere in there I spent 7 years managing a video store, so I watched a whole lot of movies, as well. I’m not sure if it’s made my tally even, but it’s definitely catching up.
Books for me. As a kid TV time was limited to like 2 hrs/week, and we didn’t go to the movies. My dad is also a voracious reader and some of my best memories are of the two of us scouring through used bookstores and going to library book sales. My mom took us to the library once a week as well.
Even now, I have 5 books on my nightstand, and Netflix DVD I received in Febrary that I haven’t watched yet. Guess I should just return it.
