Would you shoot a woman with her four-day-old child next to her?

Suburbs? If by “suburbs” you mean “boonies,” maybe.

I’m going to side with the people saying that this was a drug related massacre.

When people who can’t find or don’t find legitimate work are not able to pay their bills, sometimes they’ll drift into illegal enterprises. It may be fun to watch “Breaking Bad” or “Weeds” or “No Country for Old Men”, but this can and does happen occasionally when
families try to operate a below-the-law cash businesses in a world filled with ruthless, well armed, and well organised criminals.

Does that make it right? No.
Is this new? Not really; nasty things have happened to people in moon-shine turf wars from what I understand for 80 years.

Whats new is that we have better media coverage now and we still have large pockets of recession/depression based unemployment and poverty.
My question would be: If marijuana was legal in Ohio and if this family was able to make daily deposits to a bank account like any other business in Ohio can, would there have been any incentive for an organised hit team to try to take them down and to steal their cash?

I don’t know life in the country well enough to answer this… but I will say that I’ve never heard of armed gunmen taking down a roadside corn-stand and murdering everyone involved.

Help me, that made me laugh. Probably means i’m not a good person…
I just saw someone defending themselves in court and pleading “Well I did put the kids in the closet BEFORE I shot their Mom…”

Sure go ahead and find me proof that the execution style killing of 8 members of a family were ignored by the media because of race. Even in a market like New York where I get my news individual killings are covered. Something like this would still be big news.

Would it be national news, though?

1,000 people have been murdered in Chicago this year - quick, how many details of individual victims do you remember?

Can you give the name (without googling) of the 12 year old boy lured into an alley and killed because of his father’s gang ties?

But one family in the Ohio “boonies” is murdered and everyone is talking about them for days.

I think you’re off by about 850 or so murders, dude.

For news purposes numbers matter. Car crashes killing one or two people happen everyday and are only local news. If two minivans crash killing 15, that makes the national news.

Such a nice, tidy round number should alert you to the fact it’s not an exact statistic.

If I had said 231 murders (number pulled out of ass for strictly example purposes this time), yeah, but otherwise, consider it like saying “a bajillion”.

It definitely alerted me to something.

It was a thousand shootings in Chicago that was recently reported in local media, not murders. I just assumed you were conflating the two statistics, not being hyperbolic.

Holy crap - you’re not kidding? 1,000 shootings in Chicago this year? I didn’t know.

Should we start a petition to rename the city New Detroit?

As to the OP:

Yes I would.

Yes I could.

Shooting a 12 year old girl can happen too.

Circumstances, Circumstances, Circumstances,

No guns in the country, big stick, knife, isolated farms with no guns and small & old people can be killed quite easily.

I can say with 100% accuracy that not having a gun did not save my daughter from being murdered.

I can say with 100% accuracy that not having a gun did not keep one of my sisters from being rapped.

I can say with 100% accuracy that having a gun has saved myself and several other family member’s lives. Not counting military service and in my extended family there are many more cases.

100% accuracy, all shooting were legal, moral ( we are a bunch of born & bred Catholics ) , and nada legal problems.

For the females in this thread, would you give up guns, no guns in the USA but then have to be in a place where the mass rapes that European places are having are prevalent?

Yup. I don’t allow guns in my house. I don’t associate with people who own guns. If I had kids, I’d never let them go over to anyone’s house where guns were kept. Why? Because statistics indicate that fewer than 300 gun related incidents per year in the US are legitimate self-defense efforts vs. the enormous number of gun-related homicides, accidental shootings, and suicides. The stats indicate that any woman living in a home with a gun in it is at very high risk of being killed by said gun, either by her so-called friends/family/sexual partners, or by someone trying to steal the gun. The odds of being hit by lightening or winning the lottery are much higher than the odds of you ever being protected by a gun.

Hunters who keep their rifles in firmly locked gun safes at all times and don’t ever talk or think about using them in self-defense may get a pass.

I don’t ----- and I do. I’ve known enough cases where people have had their kids along for robberies, shoplifting and more. Heck, I recall one case where someone tried to knock over a bank with their kids in the car outside. For people who have chosen “crime” as an occupation I think it sometimes can become a type of family business or something of the sort. We have multi-generations of moonshiners and con artists and some multi-generations in the bigger drug cartels. I know a few gang members who followed in Dad’s footsteps and labs cooking meth with kids in the next room. So something like this ----- no big surprise.

Depends on the child, I guess.

Well I can’t give you the name of the family in Ohio either and I just read the article this afternoon so that’s hardly proof of anything. The young boy in Chicago was news for quite a while and I don’t live anywhere near Chicago.

It’s not just that these are white people so the media cares about them. The media can certainly have a bias in that respect, but this really is a weird story. It’s a lot of people all at once, in the same family…at four different houses…and it turns out they have no idea who did it…and oh by the way there was a pot farm at three of the houses…and also there was cockfighting. About every 12 hours a new bizarre detail comes out and gets people talking again.

If it had just been what I assumed it was when I first heard about it (a large put otherwise ordinary murder-suicide), it would have made the news, but it wouldn’t have stuck around that long.

Professional pride wounded? Mass muderers are so sloppy these days.

Pretty much what I am saying. You can’t dismiss that there is media bias when it comes to reporting crimes but the overall reason for what is picked up as a story is if it is perceived as interesting. The planned professional looking execution of 8 members of one family at four different locations has people interested in the story. Bringing up Chicago is a bad comparison. The 50th murder in a year in a city is not big news. The 1st murder in 50 years in a small town is. It might not be right but that’s just human nature. We are drawn to the unusual. The news media knows that. I also thought it was going to be a murder/suicide. That would have been a story nationally for one day. This is a much more interesting story and it has legs. Everything I’ve seen about this story has been in print and until this thread I had no idea what the race of the family was.

I would never put myself in the position to have to make that decision.
