Sock accounts make sense in some fora of communication. I would set up a ‘sock’ account on Amazon, just so I could review products that I would rather not endorse with my actual name (like dodgey books and sex toys). But creating socks so you can argue with or support your own position is just lame.
I suppose for a person with several different areas of expertese/interest it would be good to have a different username for each area. That way having an unpopular view in one area won’t tarnish the communications within another separate discussion. But there are many disadvantages as well as advantages to such a situation, perhapse if each identity was cross refferenced within the database so that warnings and susspensions would effect all of a user’s identities it might work.
