What a bunch of hypocrites, you all claim you wouldn’t be caught dead appearing on those shows much less watch them and yet someone is watching or they’d be long gone.
If these were people you knew personally you’d all be talking over the watercooler about them almost constantly. It’s only when they appear on one of THOSE shows that they become an object of ridicule. When you’re not getting the dirt privately your sensibilities are agast at the nerve of these people to put their live on public display like that. Ooh! I think I’m getting the vapors poor little me.
You’re taking these shows WAY too seriously, they’re just a bunch of dumb-asses and this is their only chance to be on TV. Sure it be nice if they were on because they discover a cure for Cancer but even they’re not that stupid. They know this is it, take it or leave it.
First of all I lurked for a long time before I posted, then I only posted because I’ve had this same arguement with friends before.
They could take an honest disagreement and I had supposed you guys could as well. Let’s face it, probably all of you watch these shows on occasion and you have to reconize that there’s a weird fascination to them.
If you have an honest arguement with me about my views I would be happy to listen but just saying shut up doesn’t advance your position any and leads me to ask when your air date is so I can record it.(Don’t forget to raid the minibar, you want to get as much as you can while your 15 minutes of fame lasts).
I know this aspect has been brought up before, but it’s worth bringing up again. A friend of mine was on one of those shows, “You Be the Judge” was the name, I think. It was completely made up, he was just happy about the fact that he got a free trip to LA to be on the show, but there was absolutely no truth to the “reason” he, and the others, were on the show. I think the majority of the people on these shows fall into this category, and if you can take advantage of that, hell, go for it if you want to, in my opinion. On the other hand, I do agree that the “real” people on these shows are complete losers–people just looking for their 15 minutes at the expense of the integrity of themselves and others.
Has anyone addressed the fact that there is an ongoing demand for these programs? I personally enjoy these programs, but I never get to watch them. I work when they’re on, and I can barely keep up with what I already tape. I am an unabashed pro-rasslin’ fan–at least I was years ago when they were mostly “people” instead of trademarked “characters,” and I look at these talk shows as extensions of ‘rasslin’ type shows. It’s not real–and even if it is, who cares? And although I’d never seriously do it, I have talked with my lady friend about what kind of story we could make up to get on one of these shows. We both have lots of colorful characters to choose from to make it fun.

I fail to see the logic between the first and the second part of your sentence. Nobody argued that these shows weren’t popular: despite their numbers, they definitely are and the sponsors are quite happy. What I was saying, basically, was that I wouldn’t be caught dead showing my semi-dirty laundry to millions who have never heard of me and whose collective wisdom is very much a question mark. I very much prefer to keep it private and go to a few friends for advice if need be.
You go on to say:
Frankly I couldn’t care less about rumours and innuendos. I really make no special effort to “get the dirt privately”. As for the “vapors”, blame it on andropause.

I, too, know someone who went on one of these shows. Apparently she felt that was the only way to get the attention of her husband who was a meth user. Also, he and she were given some counseling. It apparently did help them somewhat.
Needless to say I was totally shocked. I couldn’t imagine knowing anyone who would air their dirty linen in public–maybe I’ve just never been that desperate.
magi, I posted as I did because your first post seems solely designed to provoke a response. Anyone whose first and only post on the board is a random, tepid attempt and flaming-- even in the Pit-- will be considered a troll until proven otherwise.
Toddle off to one of the other forums, and post actual worthwhile messages for a week or so; at that point I might start taking you seriously. Until then, you can expect to be dismissed as noise.
I sorta remember an interview with jerry Springer. He claimed that he was a champion for the poor and downtrodden of the world, because they have no one to turn to for emotional or psychological help. Hey if you REALLY wnat to help, set up free psych clinics, don’t drag me into strangers’ problems.
“On the edge of sleep, I awoke to a sun so bright…”
I used to watch Springer religiously, in college, but it was, like Mjollnir (sorry if I spelled it wrong) said, like pro rasslin’ where you know it’s fake & you watch for entertainment. (For the record, I also watched Monday Nitro every week.) I just thought it was funny. Plus, IMO, talk shows beat the living bejeezus out of soap operas.
