WOW - 2 Golden Globes to Ricky Gervais for "The Office"

Has anyone else ever won a TV series Golden Globe for a non-US series? The Office is just the kind of show I would expect to fall flat on it’s face in the US. Well done Ricky, I’ll never forget David Brent or Wernham Hogg.

According to the news here, no non-US series has even been nominated before, let alone won.

Go the Brentmeister General!

Isn’t The Office two years old? Were there ever more than 2 seasons made?

Yes, and no. There were two series done, and then the cast reunited for 2 final episodes this Christmas (which, if you followed the series and haven’t seen them, you have got to watch!), and that’s it.

Quite sensibly, he didn’t want it to jump the shark, and cleverly avoided doing so in the bonus episodes.

I have no idea why it received its nomination this year - maybe it took that long to filter into the judges’ consciousnesses.

The series is now being remade for the US. I am curious and slightly dubious about how it will pan out.

I’m guessing a US remake will either suck hard or go the way of the US remake of Red Dwarf.

At any rate, I’ve only seen the first series, having gotten it on DVD for Xmas. I’m buying series 2 as soon as I’m able :).

I assumed it was nominated in the US because it began showing there last year.(?)

One of the rumours I heard was that they were planning to set it in Manhattan, which would be a big mistake IMO, since the whole point of setting it in Slough in England is that Slough is a miserable and pointless shithole of a town. The choice of location reflects the futility of the protagonists’ lives.

The rumor I read somewhere was setting it in New Jersey which in my very limited experience would make be ideal

Yep, as was so nastily put to poetry by Betjamin.

Come happy bombs and fall on Slough,
It isn’t fit for people now …

Poor Sloughies

similarly nondescript = miserable and pointless shithole of a town

but not as funny.

Another rumour I heard was that they were considering Brad Pitt as David Brent (Brad is a big fan of the show). Which misses the point yet again, though I suspect the rumour may be rather far-fetched.

Wonder if they’ll go with canned laughter? I hope not.

There are very few actors in hollywood/TV land that would be willing to take on the part of Brent. If they are famous, their agents will not want them to play such an unmitigating shit. They will require bits to be written in to show that they have redeeming qualities.
I dread what a team of scriptwriters could do to it.

I heard an interview with Ricky Gervais on NPR’s Weekend Edition Sunday yesterday, and he said that in discussions with Greg Daniels (writer and producer of King of the Hill, who is writing and producing the American version of The Office), they imagined that Newark, NJ was the equivalent of Slough.

Gannon Ricky lad. The Office is class and is spot-on as it is. Any US remake will be terrible.

The UK dont remake Friends because it has some NewYork in-jokes in it, why would yanks want to remake this? Something to do with keeping the money in America? If thats the case, i hope Ricky screwed them to the floor !

Does anyone know where I could get a transcript of his acceptance speech?
