Wow! Just watched Mongol on Netflix.

Mongol is the first of what is supposed to be a trilogy of films about Genghis Khan. I’ve seen it mentioned here on several Doper’s favorite movie lists & now I know why. It’s available for instant viewing if you’re interested.

I hope they are able to pull off the remaining two films this well.

I hated tearing my eyes away from the film to read the subtitles though.

Huh, I’m a little surprised you liked it so much. I thought it was mediocre. Yes it had nice cinematography, but they seemed to get really confused as to just what movie they were making. They kept moving back and forth from poorly-explained battles to the romance. The actors pulled it off well, but it’s like they had two movies and spliced scenes together randomly.

While I, too, hope the sequels come… I hope they distinctly improve on it or it’s probably not worth watching. PLus, I’m a history geek and was a little miffed they turned the incredibly badass story of Genghis Khan into little more than a standard war-romance movie.

I saw it in the theater and didn’t have any trouble following it. I don’t think it was all that historically accurate, but it was still a helluva movie. Maybe the acting was a little TOO good. You ended up liking him and he was not a likable guy. I’m looking forward to the sequels just for the spectacle. I think they’ll make him more badass too. They’d better.

I don’t know enough details about Genghis Khan’s life to be put by any bad history. I don’t watch movies to learn history anyway. At best, a movie may move me to read up on the historical basis of the film. A movie like *Braveheart * is pretty much wall-to-wall bad history, but I can still enjoy it on its own merits. I enjoyed Mongol in that same vein.
