Wow, that's a great cover of that song

Holy cow! I had no idea that was a cover.

They did rather make it their own, didn’t they? There’s a bit of a story behind it.

English band Happy Mondays covered the song in 1990, retitling it “Step On”, with two different music videos. It was originally intended as a contribution to the Rubáiyát: Elektra’s 40th Anniversary compilation for their US label Elektra, but they decided to keep it to release as a single, and instead covered Kongos’s “Tokoloshe Man” for the compilation.

Smart decision. If anyone is interested, here’s the John Kongos version (which I actually remember from its original release).

The other thread about Black Sabbath’s Paranoid reminded me of the cover by the world’s greatest cover band, The Dickies:

Excellent.

There was a punk band in Memphis in the late 70s (Barking Dog) that did a speedy version of the Moody Blues’ Nights in White Satin. Over the years since, I’ve tried to explain it to people.

And I just now found the answer: it was just like The Dickies!

Another better version of Hotel California played on a 6 string fretless bass :-

That’s fairly impressive. I have enough trouble hitting the right notes with frets! Which makes me wonder… are there tabs for fretless instruments? How does that even work?

I suspect you’d use the same tabs as for a fretted bass.

The Shangri las original was on a soundtrack, which caused me to remember this cover…

And Blue Lou Marini on sax.

Meg Myers on Kate Bush’s Running Up That Hill:

I Am The Walrus

This is a cover in the sense that it’s sung by Hemi Rudner (who I’d never heard of before I stumbled across this clip) but the arrangement by George Martin is pretty standard.

Still, this kid puts all he’s go into it.

I did a discourse search on this thread for Africa and only found two hits, neither of which was this one:

This might be the best cover of any song I’ve ever heard. Imagine you go to get a pizza and Louis CK’s doppelganger is belting this out in the corner.

This gives me chills despite not even liking the song Africa.

I skipped over this the first time because there wasn’t a link, but wow, that is a great cover. Haunting video too.

I can’t stop watching this Sugarland and Sara Bareilles cover of Come On Eileen Sugarland and Sara Bareilles cover "Come On Eileen" - YouTube

I’ve posted this once before, back in 2020. Not really an AC/DC fan, and can’t speak to the musicianship of the performance, but in terms of spectacle, the Badpiper’s version of “Thunderstruck”, played on flamethrowing bagpipes freaking rocks.

(Discourse isn’t letting me post the video).

Shun Ng and Magic Dick do James Brown proud with their cover of Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag. You can even catch a tiny hint of Whammer Jammer in there. Papa's Got A Brand New Bag - Magic Dick & Shun Ng (James Brown Acoustic Cover) - YouTube
