Wow! The Guess Who was prolific

I went on itunes to see if they had The Guess Who’s "Dancin’ Fool (they do). There are a ton of Guess Who songs. And a lot of them are good ones that I remember. Looking back, I’d say The Guess Who was underrated.

If you want to immerse yourself in the greatness that is TGW, their albums were reissued in Canada, 2 on 1 CD, a couple of years ago. There are none which I don’t recommend. They didn’t make any bad albums, and many of them went over the line from great to incredible. Before you die, you must hear “Share The Land”, “So Long Bannatyne”, “Rockin’” and “Artificial Paradise.”

Burton Cummings wrote more great songs with Kurt Winter than he did with Randy Bachman. Randy was fired / quit (depending on whose story you believe) after “American Woman”, which is a pretty freakin’ great album itself. With his two replacements, Winter and second guitarist Greg Leskiw, they became immortal.

Fight my ignorance: What’s the difference between “The Great Who” and “The Who”?

Help my ignorance: Who’s the “Great Who”?

The Guess Who: from Winnipeg, Manitoba: Burton Cummings, Randy Bachman (-ex), Kurt Winter, Greg Leskiw, Jim Kale, Garry Peterson (core group, later personnel changes. Broke up in 1976.) Kurt Winter now deceased. Known for: American Woman.

The Who: from England: Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey, John Entwistle, Keith Moon (later Kenney Jones). Still going occasionally, despite numerous farewell tours. Moon and Entwistle now deceased. Known for: My Generation.

The Guess Who was totally underrated everywhere but in Canada, which often happens with Canadian bands. I have about three Guess Who songs on my mp3 player, which only holds four hours of music. There are more waiting for the next playlist change.

The Guess Who was not only prolific, but Burton Cummings went on to have a pretty good solo career, at least in Canada.

And the man could sing–have a listen to “I’m Scared,” or “Break it to 'em Gently,” or “Dream of a Child.”

Sadly (or perhaps fortuitously), the man could not act. If you ever want to see a bad movie, have a look at his on-screen debut: Melanie.

I was at the Toronto premiere years ago. I met Cummings. Nice guy, but dammit, how do you tell the guy (after the screening) that he really cannot act? IIRC, we discussed his music, a nice safe topic.
