Wow, The Seinfeld characters really were assholes!

One of my favorite episodes of any show, ever, is the episode of Seinfeld where Elaine hates The English Patient, because I hated The English Patient, and I worked in an art film house, so I had to run the projector for it like 24 times. I couldn’t tell people I hated it without a “What’s wrong with your soul?” look. So I loved that Elaine hated it too.

I still want to watch the movie “Sack Lunch”.

Early in the series they made it pretty clear though with bits of his standup put into the show.

True, I guess, I forgot about that (it’s been a very long time since I’ve watched Seinfeld). Also a prominent feature of Louie’s format.

What? George Costanza wasn’t a fine, upstanding citizen??? I’m shocked! Shocked! Look, you were supposed to laugh at the Seinfeld group because they were so shallow and asocial. It was a parody not only of the common sitcom formula but also of people who might actually act that way. It made fun of them. They were not nice people, but you were supposed to know it and you were supposed to laugh at their self-centered ways. You may be too young to remember the Carroll O’Connor character, Archie Bunker, but he was an unreconstructed bigot. We laughed at him because he was such an idiot. We weren’t asked to take him seriously. If you did, and if you agreed with him, then you were part of the joke that everyone else was laughing at.
