What? George Costanza wasn’t a fine, upstanding citizen??? I’m shocked! Shocked! Look, you were supposed to laugh at the Seinfeld group because they were so shallow and asocial. It was a parody not only of the common sitcom formula but also of people who might actually act that way. It made fun of them. They were not nice people, but you were supposed to know it and you were supposed to laugh at their self-centered ways. You may be too young to remember the Carroll O’Connor character, Archie Bunker, but he was an unreconstructed bigot. We laughed at him because he was such an idiot. We weren’t asked to take him seriously. If you did, and if you agreed with him, then you were part of the joke that everyone else was laughing at.
