Agreeing with others that it was good. Not groundbreaking, but the typical straightforward plot. Is it just me that wishes that they had jumped some more games? I was tired of the Sugar Rush game and Vanillope by the end (I think they could have made her a lot less annoying and it’d still have worked well.) It was cute though and I loved the detail they put into it. I don’t know if I’d pay the usual $10 price but it was definitely worth the $5 we each paid to see it.
Saw it yesterday with the kids. We all enjoyed it. One of the things I loved, aside from the gaming aspect, was the attention to detail in Sugar Rush land. It could have easily been a candy-themed movie on it’s own. My favorite part was the Oreo guards. “Oh-Ray-Oh.”
I went with my wife and a buddy, and we all loved it. I agree that the storyline was fairly typical once you really got into it, but the animation and the characters made up for it, in my mind. I did find myself wishing they had had a reason to jump to some other games, though – even if they’d been additional made-up games.
I enjoyed the short film, but I didn’t think it was quite as engaging as a lot of the Pixar shorts. The animation was outstanding, though.
Sarah Silverman is now an official Disney Princess.
It is canon. It cannot be undone.
I agree about more game jumping. I would have liked to have seen maybe a ‘quest’ element to get Ralph into more games. Maybe Ralph having to stealthily move around another game while a player was playing.
I was shocked that Wash from Firefly was King Candy.
I did find it funny that Vanelope basically cheats to win as the status quo of her game at the end. That’s a nice message.
Also, strange that they treated it like Ralph only gets to see her when he gets thrown off the roof at the end of his game…there’s nothing stopping HIM from going to visit her in Sugar Rush…and a little unanswered as to why SHE can’t leave her game now that she is back in the code.
I may be stretching this for the sake of my own sanity, but I wondered the same thing, and ultimately came to the conclusion that he meant seeing her in action, while she’s racing — her passion — as opposed to just visiting her to say hi.
Yeah, I don’t think we were left with any reason to think that they never go hang out in game central station or anything…
I saw it last night and agree with the general feeling: highly formulaic plot development, but everything else: sets, characters, dialogue, music, everything was beautiful and joyful. It was pure eye candy, but done so well it’s not even a guilty pleasure kind of eye candy.
It’s just a lovely movie, and possibly the first one clearly made by people who grew up with games and wanted to honor them instead of make a quick buck off the growing demographic (cf every video game movie ever).
FWIW, Paperman looked like it might be boring to kids, but I heard a lot of children laughing in the theater.
Same. Am I wrong, or was it was a dead-on homage to Charles Nelson Reilly? I’m actually not very familiar with him, just through parodies, but it seemed like his voice mannerisms. I thought his performance was very fun, either way.
I thought that it was Ed Wynn
I didn’t take it as Charles Nelson Reilly, although it was familiar. I thought King Candy was most like the Mad Hatter in the animated Alice in Wonderland, but my memory could be failing me.
Ah, yes: Alice in Wonderland: Unbirthday Scene.
Oop! You all are right, that’s what I was trying to remember. Definitely the Mad Hatter.
I thought King Candy was Charles Nelson Reilly, Mad Hatter and Garry Marshall all mixed together.
Loved the movie. I don’t know how it couldn’t seem like it was formulaic. We have all seen hundreds of movies and its tough not to seem like one of them. But, as others have said, I enjoyed it and thought it all came together well.
I would have liked to have seen more cameos as well. Or maybe the villains coming together to help Ralph? And certainly going to more video games, even if in a montage scene, would have been cool.
I really wanted subtitles for q-bert-ese!
I was really surprised that Alan Tudyk had done the voice! Wow! And well done to him! Definitely thought of old style actors with the performance.
However, while I certainly thought Paperman was very well done, my thought that I said at the end of it was, “I know I don’t have a job anymore and you are interviewing but at least we have each other.” I get it, true love conquers all, but I guess I’m old enough to be over that thinking.
vislor
Love love loved it. I’m gonna try to see it again this week if I can. It’s the best animated thing Disney has done (outside of Pixar) since The Lion King. Not surprising that John Lasseter was in charge.
It was a very enjoyable movie - I didn’t mind sitting through it with my kids at all. I thought all the actors were great - I particularly enjoyed Jack Breyer and Jane Lynch, and her backstory. I also agree it would have been nice to see Ralph visit other games.
PS my kids loved the ‘duty’ jokes.
Should I be hoping for a sequel where Ralph enters more games, and maybe a cameo by Mario? Jack Breyer and Jane Lynch were fantastic, but I thought Sarah Silverman did a great job as well. I really felt for her character when Ralph destroyed her dream of racing.
I went to see it with my brother. Most people in the thearter had children. Neither of us really liked the short before the movie. What was it called? ‘Paper Boy’?
Edit: Ah, ‘Paperman’
My wife and I saw this Friday night, and loved it. We’re probably going to go see it again. IMHO this movie was a better successor to Tron than that Tron Legacy movie was.
BTW
They had a D-box display at the theater we went to see ‘Argo’ in. You pressed ‘start’ and the ‘Reck-it Ralph’ trailer played… it was actually REALLY cool, and I think I would rather go see the movie with D-box than in 3D.
Anyone ever try a movie with D-box?
We saw it Saturday and we all liked it. I thought there wasn’t a lot of really funny, bust a gut, stuff in it, but it had plenty of amusing things along the way. Alan Tudyk was great as the king, John C. Reilly’s voice really worked as Ralph, and Jane Lynch is great in just about everything she does.
My kids didn’t get all the game references, but my son thought seeing Sonic was cool. I liked the little things that they threw in like the marine Ralph first meets is stuck walking into a wall. I also thought that Fix It Felix Jr (from the game Fix It Felix Jr) was going to fix Vanilope’s code, so I give them some credit for being different than what I predicted.
It would have been nice to have Ralph make his way through more games, so maybe of there’s a sequel they could have a quest spanning multiple games or something.
