They did a really good job with the world of Sugar Rush, I thought. I would play that game!
I’m not a gamer but I’m a gaming nostalgist (??) so I really appreciated the old characters and knew most of them.
Was there any Zelda references? And does anyone know why there was a lack of Mario? (Mario himself - we saw Bowser…)
My theater was all kids, and it was packed. I was there on a first date with guy lol (I chose the movie!) But we went to the 2D showing and the last one was at 7 PM. And it was going against Skyfall. So it was inevitable that there’d be a lot of kids.
Actually it was a lot of dads with kids, not moms. I thought that was cool.
They tried to get Mario in the movie, but Nintendo wouldn’t go for it. They said Nintendo requested too high of a fee to incorporate Mario and Luigi.
The video games for the movie are sort of sequals… I had to youtube footage of the game, (I saw the 3DS make, it’s also out for the DS and Nintendo Wii) because even in the ads for the game, I didn’t see footage. At least the 3DS game takes place *after *the movie.
I get to pat myself on my back for my keen eyesight. This page has a picture of the wall with the Aerith Lives graffiti. I did miss the “All Your Base” graffiti on the other side. It did go by quick.
I saw this yesterday with my mother and we both enjoyed it, although my mother is largely unfamiliar with video games post Pac-Man. (She laughed really hard at the Oreo guards, though.)
I agree with others that it would have been nice to see Ralph visit another game or two; early on it seemed as if game hopping was going to be a bigger part of the movie, but he wound up spending a good chunk of the film in Sugar Rush. I think it would have been fun to see him in a Mortal Combat-esque fighting game.
That’s my take on it as well, Asimovian. Ralph wouldn’t otherwise be able to see Vanellope in action as a player character, since he would be on duty in his own game. And Vanellope apparently can leave Sugar Rush after the game is reset, as she was maid of honor at [del]Coach Sue and Kenneth the Page[/del] Sgt. Calhoun and Fix-It Felix Jr.'s wedding. This was held in the same chapel as the ill-fated ceremony in Calhoun’s backstory, and so was presumably located within Hero’s Duty.
My take on it is that the Nicelanders picking him up and throwing him off the building has always been the crummiest part of his job, but now when it happens, he gets to see Vanellope, and that makes a crummy job good.
It’s a lot like this bit in the Simpsons, where Homer turns what would be a morale-crusher into something hopeful. Sure, he gets to see Maggie when he goes home, but having her pictures there makes his job survivable.
Finally got around to seeing it, and my face hurts from smiling. Not a video game player at all, but I had absorbed enough from osmosis (and Robot Chicken) to get any number of the jokes.
I saw it. I should really have waited to see it in the cinema. I really enjoyed it. Looked great, some nice characterisation. The plot etc. wasn’t up to much. Some more 8-bit style tuneage would have been nice and I agree with those above saying a few more world jumps would have been nice.
Yes, she can clearly leave the game now, I was actually wondering why she couldn’t when Ralph tried to drag her out. And also, where is there a church in that Hero’s Duty hellscape…
Well, we’re told Calhoun’s doomed first wedding is an official part of her backstory, so this presumably comes up in the game somehow – perhaps as a cutscene. If so, the church would have to exist in the game world somewhere.
