Wrecked SUV; keep or sell?

In the wee hours of Tuesday morning, my 4Runner was crashed (not by me). :frowning:

If the insurance company decides that it should be fixed (and not “totalled out”), should I keep it or sell it?

I bought it (brand new) in August of last year. Since that time I have really babied it, keeping it in the garage and hardly ever driving it. It only had 3300 miles on it. It still smelled “new”. :sniff:

I expect that I’d be extremely hard pressed to find another one with such low mileage. On the other hand, I wonder how safe it will be in another crash.

Crash details: my son was driving about 40 mph and lost control (probably a wheel dropped off the road and he snatched it). The truck left the road and came to rest on the driver’s side in a thicket of small trees. The whole front cap is probably toast. I don’t know yet if there was damage to the engine, except that I have heard that the battery was crushed.

What would you do?

As long as it is repaired, why wouldn’t you keep it? If you sell it, you’ll take a beating on depreciation. I would keep it.

And not let the kid drive it ever again.

NinetyWt is going to take the beating on depreciation? I think the son will be taking the beating after wrecking his parents car.

I would keep it.

Your insurance co. will want you to send it to El Cheapo shop, insist on a Toyota dealership using OEM parts. Have them closely check engine/suspension/drivetrain. Those are things that may have been effected, but may not be noticeable.

gato I have a low interest loan so maybe the depreciation won’t be so bad. Pre-wreck, the thing was worth $24 k and the balance of the loan was $23. Of course, post-wreck, who knows.

broys he gave himself a pretty good beating.

Nurse good advice as ususal. I’m still not sure how much the ins. co is willing to pay, so I didn’t want to push the issue. I might take it to the Toyota place after the fact and have them check out the engine/suspension/drivetrain out of my own pocket.

Well, never mind.

The repair estimate was over $22,000.

Now the question is: should I get another one? I really liked the style of the 2002 much more than that of the 2003. Should I get a used 2002, or a new 2003?
