Quick question:
I am digging those crazy watches at TokyoFlash, and I was wondering if anyone knows of any other brands that have really unique watches? Thanks.

It looks like it uses the same movement (7S26), so the main differences will be cosmetic, the bracelet band looks a little pinchy though, the bracelet on the Monster is very well-made and non-pinchy, if you like bracelets that is (I don’t)
If you wear an Auto every day, you shouldn’t need a winder, the Monster has around a 40-ish hour power reserve, it can handle about a day or so of not being worn, watch winders also tend to make the “7S*6” movements run a little fast, when you wear it, it’ll drop back down to normal speed
<grumble, grumble, stupid 5-minute editing time limit…>
if you’re wearing the watch just on the weekend, letting it wind down won’t hurt it, you’ll just have to re-set it , letting a 7S*6 movement wind to a stop will not damage them or lower their accuracy, either way, a winder is merely a convenience
Just a quick update, I bought the Invicta 8926 (it should arrive any day now) and am talking to an eBay guy about a deal on the Seiko Orange monster.
Should have known…I go looking for one watch and I am going to get two…and my wishlist is 8 watches strong now.
I need help.
Nice looking watch. Congrats.
I know the feeling, the good news (at least for me) is that the Orange Monster has largely cured my WIS’ism (Watch Idiot Savant), you may find you’re satisfied with the Invicta and the Monster
OTOH, if you have a terminal case of “Collector-itis”, you may be beyond hope, all i can reccomend is DO NOT research high-performance flashlights (SureFire, Pelican, Streamlight, custom-modified Maglites, etc…) or high-performance knives (Spyderco/Benchmade/Kershaw…)
if you like one kind of well-built fancy shiny thing (watches), you’ll probably like other fancy shiny things (flashlights and knives)
…be warned, it’s a slippery slope, my freind
Thanks for all your help guys (and you too Hockey Monkey for the PM, it is what tipped the scales in favor of me getting the Invicta).
MacTech, I like looking at knives, but fortunatly I don’t really have a functional need for a high performance knife.
Flashlights on the other hand…say, what is a high performance flashlight anyway?
Never mind, I am sure I don’t want to know.
Be the first on your block to own one.
[Dr. Evil]Bwaaaaaahhhhh![/DE]
$135 for a flashlight seem unreasonable? Check out SureFire
Meh, that Pelican is nothing special, a basic Seoul Semiconductor LED and rechargable battery, a good, solid light, but nothing jaw-dropping
Mac’s “The Torch” OTOH, is a highly upgraded Maglite, capable of lighting newspaper on fire, the only thing stock in it is the Mag body tube, and even that is modified
The Torch is obviously an extreme example, but the Pelican linked above has largely been panned on Candlepowerforums as nothing more than a good, basic light
the lights i EDC (every day carry) are basically a SureFire A2 Aviator, a “Hybrid” LED/Incandescent light, 3 lumens of light from the low beam white LEDS (20 hour runtime) and approx. 75 lumens from the regulated incandescent bulb (50 minute runtime), no yellowing as the batteries drain, the light is bright white for as long as the batteries can drive the incan
it also has a “soft start” feature that slowly ramps the voltage up over the first 50 milliseconds, extending bulb life (most incans burn out at turn on due to the voltage spike into a cold filament), i have a modified LED ring on the way from an intrepid CPF modder that will give me a low intensity red LED and two white normal intensity LED, as well as a “find me” beacon and a strobe mode
I also carry a modified SureFire E1e Executive, it has a McGuch McClicky shrouded tailcap, it allows tailstanding (the stock SureFire tailcap doesn’t allow tailstanding), and a modified KL1 LED head, the stock KL1 uses a Luxeon 3 LED and optical lens for a tightly collomated 30 lumen beam, my modded head has a Seoul Semiconductor P4 LED and a McGuch McR-20S reflector, running off a rechargable 123a battery, it pushes out around 90 lumens or so for about an hour
::: shrug:::
Developed in conjunction between the LAPD and private industry, Pelican was the only company to go through the entire process and put prototypes into the hands of the officers on the street.
The officers seem to like it.
This light has been issued by the LAPD and replaces the Stacy Koonz signature edition that officers previously carried.
While having a flashlight that will set paper on fire is a cool trick, but in the real world having a flashlight completely destroy your night vision for 10-15 minutes might not be the best choice.
YM of course MV
ETA you might want to check the spec on the Pelican `130 lumens for 1.5 hours.
The 7060 IS a nice light, and Pelican makes a solid product, no denying that, it’s just not the most advanced light out there, also Pelican tends to inflate their lumen output numbers, that 130 lumen rating is at the emitter, not taking into account losses to the reflector and window, 130 emitter lumens generally scales down to 110 lumens out the front of the light
as far as the runtime goes, is that 1.5 hour runtime total runtime or runtime to 50% discharge?
as far as my EDC’s i use the A2 on it’s low 3 lumen LED setting for the most part, throwy retina burners are fun, that’s for sure, but long runtime, floody lights are far more useful to me
I’ve recently added another light to my EDC arsenal, an Eternalight ErgoMarine, it uses decidedly low-tech 5MM Nichia CS LEDs, and puts out a nice floody beam, on it’s dimmest setting, it can run for an estimated 2800 hours on 3 AA cells, plus it has other useful settings, variable flashing, variable strobe, and SOS
my little modded E1e really stuns people, they can’t believe that a light that tiny can produce so much light
::: shakes fist:::
Damn you!
Now I have booked marked those websites and started a new favorites folder called “flashlights” :smack:
All those flashlights I wind up buying will be your fault.
I hope you are happy.
Here in Thailand, you can get quite a realistic-looking fake Omega, Longines, etc., for a pittance. You could pick up several and really impress your coworkers.
I’ve never bought one myself – I’m a big fan of the Casio digital series with alarm clock, maybe $50, often less – but the ones I’ve seen look absolutely real. So I don’t know, but I’ve been told that the way to tell is that the fakes’ second hand ticks the seconds, whereas that of the real ones sweep. Is that true about the real ones?
Period.
