This is about as pointless and mundane as they come, but my life has been insufferably boring lately, so I’ll just toss it out there and share with anybody who happens to give a shit. I recently took a job as a shift manager at the local Pizza Hut in an effort to make ends meet in out current somewhat less than stellar economy. Simi Valley is a ridiculously safe city to live in, so we don’t worry too much about being a victim of violent crime. We take the normal precautions, of course, but we don’t have to stress over it as much as most Americans. Anyway, some idiotic kids placed a crank order tonight and had it delivered to the neighborhood nutcase. The driver knocked on the door several times but got no response, so he knocked again, louder and more persistently. Suddenly the door jerked open and the occupant shoved a handgun in our driver’s face and yelled “what the FUCK do YOU want”? Well, our driver happens to be an off-duty LAPD officer who’s also trying to make ends meet in these troubling times. When I left the store tonight he was outside laughing it up with the SVPD, so I’m guessing that right about now dumbass is wishing he had never been born. I’ll find out how it all went down when I talk to the driver tomorrow night. Should make for an amusing story, anyway. At least it will probably be the highlight of my miserable week.
I’ll just sign up here to see what happens.
Count me as curious, too.
You guys don’t have to post to subscribe you know.
Oh, that’s beautiful!
Yeah, but it bumps the thread, reminds the OP to follow up, and I get to make a semi smart ass remark.
Another acceptable answer is that you like to pad your post count.
Fight my ignorance here…are you not allowed to have a handgun in your house? Or not allowed to point it in someone’s face who shows up at your door? Or what?
I thought our gun laws were pretty liberal, and everyone’s allowed to keep as many weapons in their homes as they want so they can protect themselves or whatever. Obviously I am wrong. What law did this guy break?
Probably considered brandishing/threatening/assault as the pizza delivery guy had a legitimate reason to be there and was not attempting to break in.
Also, the homeowner demonstrated that he is not mentally stable enough to own a gun.(my opinion.)
Just like you can’t chase kids off your lawn with a shotgun.
Brandishing a weapon at a guy who has not broken in and has a legitimate reason to be on your property is generally frowned upon in most jurisdictions.
Also you shouldn’t point guns at cops.
And it’s California, not Texas.
Wasn’t there a case in Florida a few years ago where a guy shot dead someone who had knocked on his door to ask directions? He was aquitted IIRC.
But this guy wasn’t a cop, he was a pizza delivery person at the moment. Do cops have some always-on special security force field that they get to use no matter if they’re on duty or in their jurisdiction?
Also, the OP says the homeowner didn’t order the pizza (some pranksters did) so the guy was not expecting anyone. Especially not someone banging persistently on his door.
Sorry if I sound snarky here, I’m not trying to be at all. Trying to figure out why this would be subscription-worthy…
How do you subscribe without posting?
Click on “Thread Tools” at the top of the thread, you can subscribe from there.
The way I always figured it is that even in a cop is off duty, they are still obliged to report crimes or take action if necessary.
Yes, a cop is a cop regardless of whether they’re on duty or not.
He had a valid reason to be there (good faith attempt to deliver pizza) and wasn’t attempting to break into the guy’s house. Different jurisdictions have different standards of acceptable force for defending your property from intruders. I’m not aware of any jurisdiction where “stick a gun in the face of a guy knocking on the door” is acceptable.
That’s got to be rough. But seeing as how delivering pizzas is one of the most dangerous occupations around, maybe he’s the best person for the job!
Gotcha, thanks.
There are many reasons why a person may be knocking on your front door at a time when you are not expecting anyone. It seems to me highly unreasonable to threaten them with a gun before, (1) you find out why they are knocking, and (2) they refuse to leave after you ask them to leave.
