Can you name any celebrity whose name is more often spelled incorrectly than Denis Leary’s? A google test finds about 85,000 hits on Dennis Leary, and only 63,800 for Denis. BTW, did you notice the clever way in which I avoided attempting to spell the word “mispelled” in the above question?

But I would hazard that there are a lot of other non-celebrity Dennis Learys out there in those 85,000 hits, with their names on the internet. What would be rarer is to find many non-celebrity Denis Learys.

Well “Leary” is an Irish surname and “Denis” is the usual Irish spelling of the first name, so there’s probably a good few non-celebrity Denis Learys in this part of the world.

Okay, although she’s a has been, or maybe even a ‘never was’, the fact that you couldn’t spell Debbie Matenopolous’ last name may have had something to do with it.

Ages ago, eons and eons, I spelt it “Denis”. That is because that is how it was first shown to me.
But then I came online, and every now and then would discuss Mr. Leary. Some people, who appeared more knowledgeable in the ways of the Leary, spelt his first name with two "N"s. I assumed - oh, so naively - that I was wrong and they were right.
Then I was corrected, and found myself back on the path of light, the road to righteousness.

I see Garry Trudeau’s name spelled incorrectly fairly often, as well.
I’m surprised Denis himself doesn’t bring this up more often. It seems like it would be a good target for his brand of humor.
I’ve met actually a good number of my favorite celebrities, but I think the coolest thing ever would be to take in a Bruins game with Denis and Bill Simmons from ESPN.com.

This thread is reminding me of an old and probably stupid bit by a comedian named Glen Hirsch that always cracks me up regardless. He talked about being introduced at a loud party as “Gleb Hush,” and being unable to correct them. So he’s going around calling himself (and being called) Gleb, to go with the flow. Then somebody else introduces him: “This is Gleeb Hush.” He gets mad and says, “It’s GLEB Hush! GLEB! If you’re gonna get it wrong, get it right!”
