Originally, the CT nuts thought that the buildings looked like what they thought a controlled demolition would look like. But they had a problem - there were no tell-tale very loud explosions that would accompany demolition charges.
That’s when Steven Jones stepped in. He postulated that thermite could have been used to sever the columns, thus producing no bangs.
But then that brought up the problem that thermite is super-hot, but it’s liquid and it’s heavy, therefore cuts through whatever’s beneath it, but can’t cut through a vertical column.
Next, Jones found something called “nanothermite” which is actually an explosive (the reaction proceeds in the material faster than the speed of sound), so the conspirators could use that to cut the columns!
But wait, isn’t this where we came in? There were no explosions - that’s why he had to invent this thermite idea in the first place! Now you’d just have to be incredibly stupid to hang onto this line of explanations.
I reference the link below when I have to debate 9/11. If they have an argument after reading this, I realize that I’m dealing with an idiot so I change the subject or excuse myself and leave the room.

There is an essential double standard in Conspiracy Theory.
The CT depends on uncertainty. Puffs of dust… where did those come from? Maybe it’s from explosives, they would take the building down! We don’t know, I’m Just Asking Questions!
Debunking a CT depends on certainty. Absolute unshakable certainty. Absolute certainty from an after the fact analysis of a terribly chaotic event.
Uncertainty is easy, certainty is hard.

With Sandy Hook CTs, one Scotty Walker was arrested. Not sure what came of it. You never heard such whining from the CT crowd, natch.
Only tangentially related to the thread, but a Truther interrupted the Super Bowl MVP’s post-game news conference last night.
It’s a bit of a Catch-22. Sure, it’s the most watched event of the year, but only nutters and publicity hounds pull stunts like this. You’re only hurting your own cause. Then again, I don’t give the lot of them much credit for rational thought in the first place.

Are there other buildings left in the world that were built the same way as the WTC towers?
The conspiracy theorists and the debunkers could get together and conduct a controlled experiment. They would hijack an airliner, install some kind of remote control system in midflight and land the plane and quietly remove all the passengers (per the conspiracy).
They would then send it crashing into whatever building is a stand-in for the WTC. Dozens of high speed cameras would be set up everywhere.
If the building collapses like the WTC towers did, we’ve debunked the conspiracy!
