WTF happened to GQ?

I remember a day when we had a more polite forum.

GQ was for general questions, we had a mod named (K)nick somthing .

Every now and then it got out of hand but it was handled.

Then we got this mod, New York or somthing like that, this guy took no shit. GQ was about general questions and nothing else.

Now don’t get me wrong (senseless asskissing here) The GQ mods cant be everywhere at once.

But that an obvious GD subject like this;

Went more than a couple of posts worries me.

Well, it’s a pretty big holiday weekend (in the States), so they’re probably all off bbqing at Cecil’s mansion and discussing how to take over the world.

Also, I assume GQ gets the most number of new threads a day, and so it’s probably pretty hard to “police” the place as easily and well as the others.

I know, I’m just bitching.

Xash you do a fine job, I just wish you were more like superman, ya know?

Nickrz.

Thanks. Appreciate it.

Issues that are US centric, such as the thread referenced in the OP, I usually leave for the US mods to handle.

Also, if you use the “Report bad post” function, you are more likely to get swift mod action.

South Florida has not been part of the US for some time now.

Most of the other forums get many times more than GQ.

Also, if something is a subjective topic, move it to IMHO, GQ is for FACTUAL QUESTIONS. I really hate getting warnings on my name because somebody decided to do a little anectodtefest in GQ and when I come in with cites and studies, and then called a moron, I get reprimanded. Nice.

You sure about that? GQ has 87k+ threads, with the next highest being MPSIMS at 58k+.

Fair enough, my perceptions were wrong. Although the issue for mods isn’t the number of threads, but the number of posts - and MPSIMS rules the roost, with over a million  (admittedly, GQ is still second)

Mea culpa.

I originally saw the subject in GD, but another poster had linked to the GQ thread, and suggested that the redundant GD thread be closed and the original GQ thread be moved to GD. With that in mind, I posted in the GQ thread, thinking it was destined to get moved to GD, since the GD thread seemed to be dying, as people were saying it was redundant. Wouldn’t it have made more sense to move the thread to GD, rather than lock it?

I used to read just about every new thread in GQ religiously, now I only read a handfull, and hover over a few more. I found that enough people ask questions that would do nothing more than aggravate me, or make me wonder what the hell GQ was coming to. I soon realized that a decent portion of my own posts were certainly taken in the same way by other posters. If the subject grabs my attention immediately, I check it out, if not I’ll wait and see if it gets more attention.

I’ve been a bit of a pariah in at least two forums, and have since learned that in addition to picking my battles, avoiding posts that would just irk me makes me a much happier person.

Can I echo xash’s comment? This is at least two threads in BBQ Pit that you’ve started, Evil Ghandi, to complain about threads being posted in the wrong forum. If you want to yell and scream and turn blue in the face about it, then fine, post your complaints here. If you want to help with the solution, then please use the REPORT BAD POST button (upper right corner of each post, cute little exclamation point in a box) to call the Moderators’ attention to the post.

Moderators can’t be everywhere. In the very busy forums, we don’t read every thread or every post. We rely on your help in reporting mis-placed posts.

In this case, I don’t know that the Moderators would have moved it anyhow. It’s arguably asking a factual question, albeit political in nature.

It also seems that people are putting more faith in the mods. Rather than refraining from answering a question in the wrong forum or making a stupid comment about how it should be moved, they’ll just answer it where it is and assume it will be moved at some point. I don’t think that’s so bad.

Those replies encourage more people to post in the wrong forum.
That’s bad.

IMHO:

At least 1/2 the questions asked in GQ could be answered much faster if the poster asking just went & sought out the answer themselves on a search engine. Maybe another 20% could be moved to other forums.

If only the GQ description read:

Got a factual question for the Teeming Millions (and possibly Cecil) to consider? Post it here if you can’t find the answer with a quick Google search.

It would be a much better read.

No, sorry Epiglottis, but you came in with condescending, patronising arrogance. It’s my experience that folks with such an attitude usually don’t, deep down, have terribly much to say. The bravado is a mere cover-up for an absence of character and original thought. Therefore, I find no inconsistency with your being called a moron in a factual forum.

For what it’s worth, a classical Latin or Greek username is usually an early warning sign that a poster is a tad too full of himself. Impresses your fellow sisxteen year-olds though, I’d wager - more power to you.

Uh, you haven’t actually stepped into these threads, have you?

Had I, I’d no doubt have to end up scraping them from the treads on the soles of my sneakers with a sharpened stick.
