I haven’t been to Louisiana so forgive my ignorance but does the existence of drive-through daiquiri stands mean people are allowed to consume alcoholic beverages while driving?
The Native American casino here, last time I was there, has a whole store selling every flavor of fudge imaginable. On the way out, having blown your grocery money for naught, searching for your car parked…somewhere, might as well scratch up a loose tenner, to get a couple of chunks to nibble on, on the way home. So the night wouldn’t be a total waste.
Of course not. You’re supposed to drive home first. Wink, wink, nudge, nudge, know what I mean, know what I mean? /s
Don’t be silly. The straw is taped to the cup. There’s no circumventing that failsafe.
As Tarataratara says, they put a lid on the styrofoam cup, and tape a straw across the lid and that counts as a closed container. We went through one last night and no, one was not for the driver, and that’s exactly what they did. The people who did get them waited til we were back at the house before indulging but I bet they are the anomaly.
In Louisiana, does the open-container-in-a-motor-vehicle law apply to everyone in the car or just the driver?
Well, I searched Google for “fudge shop capital of the world” and it very confidently said “Mackinac Island”, and I’m not surprised. Going to a fudge shop is one of like 3 things you can do there.

In Michigan at least you can get “Mackinac Island Fudge” ice cream, which is by far my favorite. I’m not sure how easy it is to get outside Michigan, because most brands in the grocery store don’t offer it. Only Stroh’s and Hudsonville can be found near here, and those are both Michigan brands. Google says there’s also Cedar Crest which is from Wisconsin, but I never heard of it (probably because they can’t compete against Stroh’s and Hudsonville inside Michigan).
Everyone, but only when the vehicle is in motion. Anyone can have an open container as long as the vehicle is parked but once they start moving…
Glad to “tickle an inkling”. Did you like it? It is very rich, but then fudge usually is.
I believe with some sideral-thinking, one could make other flavors than chocolate, i have had the chocolate standard with walnuts… the first other flavor that I think on, could be peanut butter velveeta fudge or maybe, maple peanut butter velveeta fudge?
Did you like it?
Oh, yeah. Easy 10/10 for me. It turned out exactly how I imagined it (and I imagined it to be quite good.) We made ours with walnuts. Just the barest hint of cheese flavor – moreso in the aroma. I would’ve liked it even stronger perhaps. I wonder if this recipe might work with something like Merkrt’s. With two kids and my wife in the house, I ended up eating maybe 5-10% of the final product. Very good stuff, will make again.
This thread reminds me of the worst vacation my wife and I ever took. Of course, that would be our vacation to Mackinaw City.

You spent an entire vacation there? It’s really only a one or two day destination, tops. Not enough to do longer than that. Interestingly enough, once the bridge was paid off the toll was supposed to go away. A government doing away with a source of income? Hardy Har Har!
I should start a sister thread to this in the Pit titled "Why the fuck aren’t there any east/west Interstates in the Upper Peninsula?". What a pain in the ass to drive to or from Wisconsin across the U.P… U.S. 2 you get stuck behind some slow poke. And it teases you by occasionally going to extra lanes but then those lanes end! ![]()

When I moved to Seattle from the Midwest in 1979, i was shocked when the Evergreen Point Floating Bridge actually got paid off. On the final day, the toll booth collectors actually handed out a carnation to the vehicles passing through. I never knew it wasn’t just a permanent source of income. The toll booths were removed, and all was well until recently when the bridge needed upgrading again.

They’d probably create a ferry instead, like with US Route 10.
That’s completely absurd! How would a ferry help someone in Sault St Marie get to Rhinelander? How would it help anyone get anywhere faster than a 75mph freeway?
There’s no land between Manitowoc and Ludington, so a ferry is better than driving around. The UP has land. They fucked up by building a 2 lane highway with cross traffic instead of a 4-6 lane limited access freeway.
I remember the used to cook and candy their fudge to temp in giant jacketed copper kettles, and then pour it out onto a marble tableu. Then they would work the fudge with three or four people with long, copper headed, wooden handled, Spatulators on the marble table mixing in ingredients ( nuts, marshmallows, etc) and loafing it in quite spectacular fashion with show and panache’.
Used to? That’s exactly what we saw in the fudge shops on Mackinac Island.
(BTW, we ended up bringing back 12 chunks - not all for us, we’re giving some as gifts, but I’ll be eating my share)

Same with GA-400 in Atlanta - it was a toll road for many years, and then one day the Georgia DOT closed the booths down and tore 'em out. I do wonder how many drivers would have preferred paying the toll rather than having a major highway into the city shut down for a couple of months…
