You know something. You just displayed your ignorance regarding military matters. And I speak from the standpoint of being a UH-1 pilot in Viet Nam and an AH-64 pilot in Desert Storm. NO HUMVEES are armored. They are, in effect, big ass jeeps not designed to withstand large caliber weapons and ESPECIALLY not RPG’s (rocket propelled grenades). I wonder if you even knew what “rpg” stood for. They are meant for transportation not armor. No army ever has, or ever will be able to armor every frickin’ transportation vehicle to withstand everything.
Well, guess you’d better lump FDR in the “asshole” category since he repeatedly sent troop transports and merchant ships across the Atlantic during WWII knowing full well thousands would die NOT FULLY PROTECTED from German U-boats (either unescorted or underescorted convoys). Hell, he stranded thousands of troops on Guadalcanal outmanned, outgunned, with not enough food and ammunition and were basically told, “Good luck, we’ll be back with more supplies as soon as we can.” I believe he was a liberal.

I suggest you write to increase the budget for fighting terror by increasing expenditures for the military in ALL aspects. Even an armored HUMVEE will not stop a land mine designed for vehicles and will NEVER stop and RPG. The armour it would take…shit…might as well get rid of them and just have 100% APC’s (armored personnel carriers which are tracked vehicles).

I was a Sergeant in 101 MI LRSD (Airborne) attached to 1ID what unit did you drive apaches for? Also, my cousin is LT. General Vines, so I can find out. Even a CW04 would be past flight status. If I am wrong about your claims I welcome your correction. But as a prior serviceman (if you are) I am sure you will understand my concerns.

Some probably even sport the 40mm grenade launcher if the driver requested it for some reason. We had that option on the AH-1: 40mm grenade launcher and 5.62 mini up front, two mini’s, or one 20mm. Depended on what model. The full mod (AH-1H) had the 20mm. Shit, I’ve been out since '94 and all the numbers and mods are starting to fade.

1st Cav in Nam, 7th/6th in Desert Storm. BTW, it was '72-‘74 in Nam so 30 years is not correct. Also, it is not unlikely at all. I got out, went back to college, then got a wild hair to go back in. Had to do the whole Ft. Rucker thing again at age 36 after fighting for a 6 yr age waiver. Had no desire to go the ‘zero’ route at my age. Went the AH-1 (Cobra) track, then, once in my unit, they transitioned to the AH-64 and back to Rucker for, I believe, 12 weeks. Graduated in June, fuckin’ Saddam invades in, what, August? BTW, plenty guys in my unit were W1’s (wobbly one’s) in Nam, stayed in Reserves, and ended up in Desert Storm as a CW4’s (you were incorrect in using CWO4).
We had the 20mm gatlings on the AH-1’s which I actually liked better than the 30mm on the 64 but the Hellfire is definitely superior to the TOW.

You also mentioned Hellfire Missiles, I cannot imagine why anyone would think an air to ground missile would be mounted on a HMMWV.
Many would in fact carry 40 mm grenade launchers, but I cannot imagine anyone in the ARMY would think that a driver can request one if it is not on the TOE [no fair googling] I do not care how long ago you got out you should recognize TOE.
