When it comes to WTF moments in TV, the first one that leaps to mind is Serena Southerlyn’s “Is this because I’m a lesbian?” comment when she was fired on Law & Order.
When The Practice was swirling the drain (counter-clockwise), on one season premier all of the sudden the secretary, Rebecca, announced she’d just passed the bar and was now a lawyer. Apparently she’d been going to law school on the sly. Despite the fact she never seemed to be away from the office.
Uh huh. Right. WTF?
I was really perplexed by the second season of Slege Hammer… they failed to resolve the cliff hanger at the end of season one (they just called it “Sledge Hammer-the early years” or something like that). Of course the problem with making it th Early Years was that Slege only got his partner (what was her name again?) at the beginning of season one, and yet there she was as his partner throughout the Early Years.
I remember a Season 7 episode of Buffy where the Scooby Gang talks to each other telepathically.
They can do that?
Yeah…if you missed the previous episodes where Willow had developed that power, that could definately throw you.
Most of the Buffy and Angel moments didn’t shock me because I am a total spoiler-whore.
The WTF moment from Law and Order that sticks out for me was when Claire Kincaid was broadsided by a drunk driver and killed at the end of an episode, while giving Detective Briscoe a ride home so he wouldn’t drive drunk.
it was more than that. At the end of season 4, to defeat Adam, they joined together, Buffy’s strength, Giles’ knowledge, Willow’s magic, and Xander’s heart, and tapped into the source of Slayer power. Which, in the last episode of season 4, prompted the first Slayer to invade their dreams, of which they were all in each others’, and try to kill them off, because Slayers don’t have friends
That happened right when they were pushing “Committed” with a promo that had the great line “Have you met me?”
My friends and I adopted both statements as our “catch phrases of the year”
Friend One: Is it because I’m a lesbian?
Friend Two: Have you *met * me?
For any viewer of Enterprise, the WTF moment came in the form of …
SPACE NAZIS?!?!!!
*Enterprise * or TOS?
When Gary was killed on “thirtysomething” I sat in shock for days. In fact, I’m still pissed at the writers.
The former. If there were any Space Nazis on the original series, I wouldn’t necessarily know because I haven’t seen a whole lot of that show.
Star Trek or Battlestar Galactica (original version)?
There was an episode where a planet adopted the efficient, organized style of the Third Reich, right down to the wardrobe, even to the point of pursecuting a group of people known as the Zayons (think Zion)
Eehhhh . . . Kindasorta. http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=353300
But, that was no coincidence; that was the doing of an Earth-human historian who not only forgot the Prime Directive, but somehow got the idea that restructuring this planet’s disordered society along Nazi lines was the best way to help its people.
For a real WTF moment on ST:TOS, see “Bread and Circuses,” where Enterprise encounters a world which is just like Earth only the Roman Empire never fell. Even worse . . .
KIRK: Hodgkin’s Law of Parallel Development . . . The language here is English!
Besides the obviously What-The-Fuckiness of Roseanne’s final season, I always thought it was weird that Darlene was a vegetarian.
I thought the space Nazis were on Voyager and it was regular Nazis on a different planet on TOS.
I was never a fan of LA Law but one of the few moments I remember while changing channels was, mean lady talking to some guy and then turns and falls down an elevator shaft. I figured after I had seen that I had seen it all.
Ralph’s baldness still makes no sense to me. Ralph was notable for his thinning hair. If it was just a toupee anyway, why didn’t he wear a toupee with thicker hair?
How about finding out Alicia and Goliath were dating on “Gargoyles”. At the end of one episode, she just started making out with the giant, gray-skinned, bat-winged monster. I don’t think I’ve seen anything top that yet.
