I didn’t get that vibe at all, although I was only around for the first six pages or so… and let’s face it, Otto has a tendency to say things that rub people the wrong way. He knows that, and I suspect he’d be surprised at how few people dislike him.

I’m glad Ed’s reconsidered and I’m hoping everyone can be more reasonable. The pile-ons on Jerry and the mods were fucking annoying, but you still expect people to be professional. (Although if it had been me, I might’ve locked everyone out. But I wouldn’t have singled out one person.)

I know that this is just a silly message board, but abuse of power is one thing I truly cannot abide and I cannot stomach the idea of continuing my membership in a place that is run the way this board has been recently.

Well good luck, but I don’t get your current complaint. Posters that almost always support the mods, bitched about this one. Posters that don’t even like Otto complained about it on principal and **Ed Zotti **did rescind his hasty decision (as he admitted it was.)

I didn’t exactly say I supported the ban, I said I understood it, which is different. I understand the impulse. I also said I think the suspension is appropriate. A permament ban would be over the top, but I get why Ed would lose it like that.

I’m sorry, but what does the verb “to remainder” mean? I checked Google as well as several dictionaries, and found no definition that helped me. No, I’m not retarded; it’s just that English is my 4th language, and I might sometimes seem retarded, as I’m not too familiar with American slang for example.
Please tell me what remaindering someone/something means.

When books are “remaindered”, it means they’re marked and sold very cheaply - I assume at cost or at a loss. Books are big and heavy, so it’s expensive to send them back where you got them. In other words, a book that has been remaindered has been put on the bargain rack.

To be fair, it seems a lot more reasonable when taken as a function of “time taken between the precipitating action and now.”

I’ve been reading and enjoying the Cecil columns for many years, and the board is more of a side interest for me. I have to agree whole heartedly with the sentiment that such immature, whiney behaviour from the writer has greatly reduced my enjoyment of the columns. Although I know that Cecil is a fictional character, I now feel that he is simply the product of a loser trying to be cool.
I’m quite sad, because that feeling is pretty irreversible. Ed should probably do what he can to mitigate the damage now. I’m sure there must be many others who feel the same way.
Just a quick point of fact regarding Ed’s book: it’s Amazon sales rank is currently #39,833, up from some 220,000 plus at the beginning. Plus, it’s only been reviewed by two buyers but both rated it at five stars.
I would also point out that I imagine that in the world of book publishing, if every single active Doper bought a copy, it would be a drop in the bucket of hoped for national sales. How many active Dopers are there? Two thousand? Three?
Hardly best-seller numbers, and I doubt very much that Ed counted on making this place a naked shill for his book.
