This article is about the recent Senate fight and Cruz’s filibuster. But I don’t want to talk about that. Look at the picture. The caption is:
The number on top of the elevator clearly says “50”. This is the US Capitol building. Its got a couple of floors but most of it is dome. How the hell can it have 50 floors? Is it all underground? Is the elevator broken? Is it a different building? DC doesn’t even have really tall buildings!
You know, it looks more like “SO” than “50” to me. This article about Senator Feinstein being stuck in a Capitol elevator refers to "an ornate elevator marked for “Senators only.” I wonder if the elevator is actually reading Senators Only. Could also be the symbol for Senate Offices.
I found a clearer photo (click on the photo to enlarge) of what appears to be the same elevator. Note they both have placards that read “S-2.” “Senators Only” is clearly spelled out in blue just below the number (here 2 with a down arrow) in red. It’s possible that the blue sign was lit up when the photo in the OP was taken, but the lighting or angle didn’t allow it to show up. The red sign in the OP’s photo can mean “Senators Only” only if the Department of Redundancy Department was in charge. That takes us back to 50, which I can’t explain.
This is quite the mystery. In one of those photos it shows ↑50… so not only are there 50 confirmed floors, but you can actually go up from the 50th floor!
I noticed that the small plaque says 5-2. It could be a system of combined numbers. This elevator might be in area 5 and go to floors 0-4. If you went down the hall you’d find an elevator labeled 4 that covered a different section of those floors.
My WAGs: It’s “SB” for “sub-basement.” The “B” is faulty and looks like a “0.” Or it’s “S-B” for Senate-side basement. Or it’s “S-0” for Senate side, floor zero.
They dug up the ground around the Capitol for the visitor centre a few years ago. The pit was deep enough for maybe four sub-levels, but not more then that.
But I’m pretty sure its an abbreviation for “senators only”. From descriptions I’ve read, there’s a special call button Senators can hit to reserve the car for their use, while at other times it can be used by anyone. In the former case, presumably the “SO” thing lights up, to indicate the Plebs have to wait.
