WTFF? or Those new talking internet ads.

So I’m sitting at my work computer, doing my usual “busy work”, i.e., Doping and various internet related activities. As per my usual work agenda, I have 8-10 windows open of various threads, email, what not. As I’m sitting here engrossed in some thread or the other, I start to hear voices.
Not the usual ones (you know…the ones always telling me everyone else is insane and must be destroyed).
This one wants me to buy tupperware!
I was a little nervous at first as I thought perhaps the original voices had finally come up with an idea for what to do with all the bodies and were about to implement their Master Plan[sup]TM[/sup].
Turns out that one of the pages I had pulled up, my beloved Get Fuzzy at comics.com, had some sort of macromedia, flashy, popuppy, annoying-as-FUCK talking advertisement.
Something labeled “Livetisement” or some such crap.
It’s bad enough it seems a lot of my favorite sites are starting to place ads in between pages you’re browsing, so you have to “click to skip”!
Pretty soon browsing the net will be like watching TV. You just won’t be able to escape the ads being forced down your throat.
You are warned!

Who buys tupperwear online… I mean really. Sell me some penis enlarger or something… but tupperwear? sad sad sad

My God, those are annoying. As you point out, they often take so long to load that you’ve no idea where they’re coming from, so their random pronouncements are a waste of everyone’s time.

Jesus christ, I’ve had half a dozen heart attacks from those things. It’s not cool to be alone in a dead-silent house and suddenly hear voices.

And Get Fuzzy kicks ass.

Try Firefox?

I’ve never seen/heard those ads, plus I just went to get fuzzy and all was quiet.

I read my Fuzzy on a daily basis and have never seen them before today, so maybe you’re just hitting it right.
I went back to that exact date (the 12th) and kept refreshing, trying to get it to come back up so I could catch the name (livetainement, livertainment, sumpthin!) but all I got was a dozen or so coke and ebay ads.
But they’re out there…lurking…

In a slightly related vein, is there any way to control which programs are allowed to make sound? I see no reason why my webbrowser should ever get to make sound, but there doesn’t ever seem to be an option to turn it off. I have it decently under control by blocking flash and ads in Firefox, but that doesn’t keep other random programs from making annoying noise. Basically, I want iTunes and Zoom player to make noise. All others can go directly to hell.

Any hacked sound drivers or obscure system watchdog programs that will let you do so on any OS?

I pit them, too! I have a stereo hooked up to my computer, so I’m always listening to MP3’s. In the middle of Creedence Clearwater Revival I do not want to buy Tupperware!

Besides, it’s a bad moon rising. Tupperware is not the answer.

You can try Ad Muncher. It comes highly recommended by a respected tech guru I know. I installed it last December, but neglected to have it turn on when Win does, so I forgot about it. It removes ads from sites. I loaded it up when I read this thread and there is an option for removing music and sounds.

I just tried msn.ca and it blocked the ad there, and I’m using Firefox, so I assume it works with Firefox as well as IE. I’m going to keep it running from now on and see how it performs. On that fuzzy site, it didn’t block the ads between pages, but I didn’t see any other ads there. However, I’m not familar with that site. It’s worth a shot.

SpywareBlaster also has a panel where you can disable embedded Flash programs.

Of course, this is all Flash, so if there’s a game or something you want to play, you’ll have to call up SpywareBlaster, find the panel, and uncheck the box, and then reload the web page. Then you have to remember to go and check the box again.

When I do this, which is maybe twice a month, I rasp out, “Kill them. Kill them all, the little bastards.” Oh, hey, an email from HR.

Personally, I use the gogoData Toolbar. IE users should check it out.
