The new American World War II memorial is finished (or about to be finished). It is located near the US Navy Memorial and the US Marine Corps Memorial, close to the First Division Memorial and in front of the Lincoln Memorial.
It looks fairly gruesome in the drawings, a blockage on The Mall. On the other hand mot of my taste is in my mouth.
Has anyone seen it? What is your eyewitness opinion?
Thank you for the reminder. I listed both of my grandfathers on their Registry back when the project started. I think it was $35 or so. I had wanted to take my grandfather (Mom’s dad, Dad’s dad passed away before the project was announced) to the dedication, but it’s too far for him to travel comfortably. We can at least get together and watch it. It does look like it’s going to be beautiful and a fine tribute.
Nothing wrong with that, that I can see.
Nice memorial.
I was in DC last weekend, and while some finishing touches were still being applied, it looked like a tasteful memorial. I don’t know what you’ve seen of it, but it looks like a circular area with a reflection pool in the middle. Around the pool, 50(48?) pillars rise up with the name of a state engraved upon them presumably to leave flowers, candle, etc. by. On opposite sides of the circle are two arches reading “Pacific” and “Atlantic”. It looks like there may have been more engravings, but I coudn’t read them because the area is still closed off.
Overall, I’d say that it’s pretty good, but probably still not as poignant as the Vietnam, or even Korean War memorial. I recommend withholding judgement until all work is completed.
OK, so I stand corrected.
It is impossible to judge these things from pictures, you have to see it in real life.
