WWDTM: I miss Carl Kasell

I wonder if he’s recording the winners’ greetings while he’s resting?

I was on the show a few years ago and won a greeting, and it took months to get it. I understand there is always a backlog, and if he isn’t able to record them while he is out sick that would make it even worse. I mean, another 3 or 4 at least are won every week.

I’m pretty sure his part on the intro segment this week was new, so I was hoping he was back. Time, I guess, will tell.

[Your joke here.]

Were you asked for any input into what he said on the greeting?

On one ep they had Don LaFontaine, the you may not know him but you know his “in a world…” trailer voiceovers guy. (His GEICO commercial.) When he lost the “Not My Job” segment he volunteered to do the phone greeting instead, which I thought was cool. (I’m surprised more celebrities with recognizable voices haven’t done so.)

This amazes me, how long could it possibly take a professional Radio Man to record 3 or 4 answering machine messages a week?

I imagine the recording session would go something like this.

I believe the voicemail greeting is in the form of a limerick custom-written for each winner.

I’d say that would make it worth the wait.

Here’s an example of one. It’s personalized, but it’s not a limerick. At least that one wasn’t.

Yes, you’re right. I went to the website and listened to a couple of them. They’re humorous, but not poetic.

He’s definitely back now- he was on yesterday’s program.

And Paula was on fire, making fun of the “studies.” And Peter’s research habits.

And yeah…great to have Carl back.

I was asked to write what I wanted him to say, which I did. It was not custom written for me, but I did write something customized for our household (I even had him speak some Japanese!)

And yay! he is back. I didn’t realize how much I missed him until I heard the opening with his voice.

I also saw the show live once when they were in Berkeley. He’s maybe more funny in person.

And he seemed to be having a very good time (especially on “Here We Ho Again”). It’s good to have him back.

Does anyone know if Carl actually doesn’t record voicemail greetings for people who lose? I’ve always assumed everyone who plays secretly “wins,” because, you know…why not? Thoughts?
