WWE's Darren Young becomes first openly gay pro wrestler

He wasn’t out until he was out of the WWE.

‘Adorable’ Adrian Adonis did this a decade or two before Golddust. I still remember The Flower Shop.

Patterson may not have been openly gay, but it wasn’t a secret during his time in the WWWF. But at that time, no one admitted to being gay. There was no TMZ to care about that shit, gossip/entertainment columnists didn’t touch wrestling, and in his time there were scant few, if any, behind-the-scenes newsletters. Worse was the fact that he liked young men, some who might not have reached the age of majority (not young as in pre-pubescent).

Goldust kicked ass. Still one of my favorite wrestlers of all time. Of course he was intended to be gay, but fairly quickly that was dropped and Marlena was brought onboard and the whole thing became “mind games”.

Poor Kanyon committed suicide a couple years ago; he was under a lot of pressure due to being both gay and bipolar, and he felt cheated by the WWE (a sentiment shared by a lot of the other WCW talent bought up by WWE). Before his death he wrote a book about his experiences which is actually quite good. What a loss – according to his wrestling buddies like Perry Saturn and Diamond Dallas Page, Kanyon was a great guy.

A few indie wrestlers are openly gay/bi and I think there’s even one or two that do some gay porn on the side!

It’s all in how you write it, though. The Face and the Heel have a few bouts, and the crowd starts leaning the Heel’s way. But then, just before a match, McMahon’s wife storms into the ring because she just found out the Heel was sleeping with her husband!

It’s a soap opera anyway, and I really do think something like that would work.

“Ravishing” Rick Rude was played up as the ultimate ladies man. He wasn’t supposed to be gay.

I can’t be the only one thinking this, but isn’t this stuff already the gayest shit on Earth? I don’t “gay” as “bad”, but as “homosexual”. There’s probably gay porn that’s less gay pro wrestling.

You sound insecure.

Not any gayer than joining any of the armed forces. Or camping with the guys. Or joining a fraternity.

Or Greco-Roman wrestling.

Darren Young deserves a lot of credit for this. I don’t know if he’s at any of the SummerSlam events I’m attending, but he’ll get some serious cheers from me.

To my knowledge, none of those are such that the primary activity is wearing very little clothes and grappling each other. So, yeah, pro wrestling is quite a bit gayer, IMHO.

I hope it goes without saying that I’m implying there’s anything wrong with either pro wrestling or homosexuality. I have nothing against either one.

How so?

And in fact some of your closest friends are pro wrestlers. :dubious:

:stuck_out_tongue:

After the grappling, they go home to their women. Military, camping, frats all live with each other. Get drunk with each other. Even shower with each other.

But whether it’s wrestling, the army, camping, or frat houses… they all are heavily represented in homoerotic filmography.

In other words, really, really gay.

Ah, gaydom in wrestling of the professional orientation.

How I still remember the Billy and Chuck Gay wedding. It was the last thing I ever watched in professional wrestling. No that was not a coincidence.

Though, IIRC they did a superb job on the Eric Bischoff makeup.

Topic title says “pro wrestler” not “WWE Superstar”, so where Orlando Jordan was employed at the time is not relevant.
Also as for Kanyon, I’m not so sure he wasn’t just looking for attention (in a desperate needy way, not an attention whore sorta way) as his story kept changing as to whether it was him or just his character that was into dudes. Considering he killed himself not long after, I wonder if any of the stuff he was doing late in his life wasn’t just a cry for help of some sort. Sad either way.

Well, if you’re going to get that technical, Orlando Jordan was bi, not gay.
