I cannot for the life of me find that recent thread about the German Occupation of France . . . But TCM is showing Part One of The Sorrow and the Pity at 2:00 a.m. Dec. 6 (that would be, early Sat. morning). I assume Part Two will be shown the following week.
I taped it last time it was on TCM, back to back. The Sorrow and the Pity is one of the most important documents ever captured on film. I could not possibly recommend it enough.
It seems that the greatest art that has come out of the Holocaust has been in documentary form, with rare notable exceptions like Europa 51. An event that’s so far outside the wonted parameters of modern human experience presented an unprecedented challenge for artists. In The Sorrow and the Pity, Max Ophuls is one of a handful of people who met that challenge. This film is one of those rare things of value that have been, over time, alchemized from the loss of humanity that manifested in the collective nightmare of the Holocaust.
